Europeans’ favorite hobbies include drinking tea and “Fanta,” smoking *our* tobacco, sexing tight-jeaned hobbits, and being outrageously catty. Due to at least three of these factors, the outgoing Italian government — distraught over its failures — posted every Italian’s tax information online, with no warning, until the site crashed due to excessive voyeurism.
Every Italian, no joke — all of their declared earnings and “tax contributions.” According to the BBC, the “tax authority’s website was inundated by people curious to know how much their neighbours, celebrities or sports stars were making.” It was up for about 24 hours, although during most of those hours it was inaccessible because everyone in the country was on it, seeing how much Julius Caesar and Nero made in estimated income Q1-2 2005.
The government pulled this HIJINK only days before the new government of Silvio Berlusconi (Berlusconi! Berlusconi!) takes over. Blame it on him!
