“NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2008 as Black Music Month. I encourage all Americans to learn more about the history of black music and to enjoy the great contributions of African-American singers, musicians, and composers.

“IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

“GEORGE W. BUSH”

The impeachment will be televised.

stankfest June 13, 2008 at 4:56 pm

How come Whitey gives them a month with only 30 days in it, and not one of those 31 day months reserved for other groups?

SecertAgentA June 13, 2008 at 4:56 pm

TRUCK NUTZZZZZZZ! Sorry, the term has got to be most amusing thing EVER. Well, that and imagining G-DUB rockin out to P-Funk. Nah…Truck Nutz is better.

Chuckie Jesus June 13, 2008 at 4:56 pm

I guess the only thing left to do is to tear the roof off tha motha, tear the roof of tha motha suckah…

KevoTron June 13, 2008 at 4:57 pm

That’s a bitchin album cover.

When Barry wins this thing in November I’ll be blasting some P-Funk. Especially Chocolate City. “Gainin’ on ya’! Can’t ya feel my breath?”

I’ve seen Parliament twice and it’s got to be the craziest concert experience one can have.

Gopherit v2.0 June 13, 2008 at 4:57 pm

[re=15978]SayItWithWookies[/re]: Damn you. Who can beat that?

Tawmn June 13, 2008 at 4:57 pm

You couln’t find a picture of Funkadelic’s “Electric Spanking of War-Babies”?

Gopherit v2.0 June 13, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Psst, Dubya. Black Music is more than Charlie Pride.

tunamelt June 13, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Black Music Month? I shall not shuck and jive for you, dammit.

Tits_LaRue June 13, 2008 at 5:00 pm

We got the funk. Gotta have the funk.

KevoTron June 13, 2008 at 5:00 pm

W than added “I got soul, and I’m superbad!” and did the robot.

AngryBlakGuy June 13, 2008 at 5:01 pm

…Kanye West anyone?

queeraselvis v 2.0 June 13, 2008 at 5:04 pm

This calls for… FUNKY PRESIDANCE!

badco/LoJ June 13, 2008 at 5:06 pm

There should be one White Music Month, where we celebrate Appalachian folk and bluegrass, contributed by the only group who hated black people enough to not steal their music.

KevoTron June 13, 2008 at 5:06 pm

Doesn’t this post call for the video of W dancing in Africa?

metropolitan June 13, 2008 at 5:07 pm

that’s fascinating, i didn’t know black people made music. i’m going to try to see if i can find some sort of album at the collector stores and hear what it’s like.

vicuna June 13, 2008 at 5:07 pm

When is Kazakhstan-American music month? Bing bong bing bong bing…

cantabrigia June 13, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome was a way better Parliament album. Remember when Barry wasn’t “black enough” — I actually used to think of him as maybe a little bit like Sir Nose d’Voidoffunk.

KevoTron June 13, 2008 at 5:10 pm

[re=16004]queeraselvis v 2.0[/re]: thank you.

RaptorAvatar June 13, 2008 at 5:11 pm

[re=16010]badco/LoJ[/re]: They did steal the banjo though, which (assuming my history isn’t wrong) was initially a slave invention built with hollow gourds and gut strings. Apparently, that creepy kid in “Deliverance” was totally down… and I don’t just mean the genetic syndrome.

sweetladyirony June 13, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Superstition is a bad-ass song.

Is this why Kellz was acquitted?

queeraselvis v 2.0 June 13, 2008 at 5:16 pm

[re=16022]cantabrigia[/re]: My favorite? Motor Booty Affair. The gatefold had a pop-up inside. And the album itself was crunk before crunk was even born.

Botswana Meat Commission FC June 13, 2008 at 5:17 pm

[re=16000]AngryBlakGuy[/re]:
It’s about time we celebrated the great black musicians, people like Louis Armstrong, Charlie Pride and Will Smith.

Cognitive dissonance FTW! Woooo!

(also: big sale on truck nutz! Woooo!)

Imagine42 June 13, 2008 at 5:22 pm

That…..is racial transcendence?

loquaciousmusic June 13, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Hey, now! Where you going with that UB40 in your hand?

Inadequate Blackmail June 13, 2008 at 5:23 pm

I’m breaking out my Sister Souljah albums.

Imagine42 June 13, 2008 at 5:23 pm

[re=16041]Botswana Meat Commission FC[/re]: Someone should tell him Al Jolson doesn’t count.

ronaldpagan June 13, 2008 at 5:27 pm

See, guys, George Bush does care about black people after all! I mean, as long as they’re entertaining him with their music.

shortsshortsshorts June 13, 2008 at 5:28 pm

DAMMIT I burned all the music when Barry got the nomination. So hard to keep up with George!

loquaciousmusic June 13, 2008 at 5:32 pm

[re=16053]Imagine42[/re]: He gets Al Jolson and Al Jarreau confused all the time.

wheelie June 13, 2008 at 5:39 pm

[re=16053]@ Imagine42[/re]: This month I will be remembering the work of Dooley Wilson, who played Sam in Casablanca, and started his career singing Irish ballads in whiteface. Sadly there is no youtube footage of those early days.

Cymbalbangingmonkeytoy June 13, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Give up the funk, George. I mean, just fucking give it up.

mookworthjwilson June 13, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Well I think in honor of this month, he should have painted the White House black… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lrp6x9AP0s

mephistopheles jefferson June 13, 2008 at 5:48 pm

And I’m listening to Do That Stuff off ‘The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein’ right now!

Gopherit v2.0 June 13, 2008 at 5:50 pm

[re=16085]mookworthjwilson[/re]: Fuck yeah. When I get too old to feed myself, I want to go to the same rest home as George Clinton.

“A fight, a fight, a nigger and a white, if the nigger don’t win then we all jump in … smoking all [of] America’s white boys”;

“A Fight”; Apache

As you can tell, this is a GOP favorite (smoking all the white boys).

masterdebater June 13, 2008 at 6:35 pm

So if I don’t listen to Black Music this month, am I a racist or something? Because my first reaction was to not listen to any just because Bush want me to. Give me some advice, ’cause I don’t want to fuck up a whole month, or piss off my neighbors. Just to be safe, I’ll crank some Snoop…and keep my pimp hand strong…yo.

When is Ameriasian Music Month, then?

Do we have white people chamber pop month? I’m almost as set up for that as I am black music month.

guerilla-nation June 13, 2008 at 9:20 pm

[re=15978]SayItWithWookies[/re]: YES! in honor of black music month, w. should have to listen to “whitey on the moon” non-stop for the remainder of the month.

[re=16025]RaptorAvatar[/re]: A friend of mine is a cousin of that guy from Deliverance. He’s completely normal, mentally, just funny looking. But kind of an asshole.

Africans may have invented the ancestor of the modern five-string banjo, but Earl Scruggs was the first guy to really figure out what to do with it.

S.Luggo June 14, 2008 at 1:14 am

Don’t be mean. George, seeing the advent of his last days, thought he was giving an award to The Ventures.

I, for one, welcome the opportunity to crank up the Sammy Davis Jr. all month long.

OK, snark over.

Bring it on, my brothers:

LAST POETS
GIL SCOTT HERON
PUBLIC ENEMY

I love scarin’ the shit outta whitey, even though I’m a fair Aryan. I particularly like it when my suburbanite pals come over and gawk all silent and incredulous at my HUGE Malcolm poster where he’s holding a semi-automatic sneaking a peek out the curtains, with the legened: BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

They just don’t get it. But they sure do go quiet in a hurry.

Makeithurt June 14, 2008 at 10:43 am

Black music? Oh, you mean Eminem?

kapish June 14, 2008 at 10:48 am

capitol-hillbilly June 14, 2008 at 11:00 am

[re=16010]badco/LoJ[/re]: you don’t know much about banjos, do ya?

Makeithurt June 14, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Black music? Black music. Oh yeah, I remember black music when there were actually some talented men and women who gave a crap about music. Now we have ignorant, finger wavin’ Beyonces and grill flashin’ cop killers spoutin’ bad prison poetry. Do we really need another month of that crap? Black music, indeed. Blech music is more like it. Black culture is sooooooo dead. SO very very dead on every level.

It’s a shame that the great music of Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Natalie Cole, Mavis Staples, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Bo Diddley, and so many other legends was put away for that Corporate America Diva and Rappa shit. None of these supermodels that do the phony, over-exaggerated gospel yodel or the finger throwing, jewelry-clad Rappas that bark prison poetry can fucking sing. I can’t wait until Melinda Doolittle releases her first CD, then these sell-outs can see what fucking talent looks and sounds like.

villageatrois June 15, 2008 at 4:23 am

What would Thelonius Monk or Charles Mingus say about this? They thought they played world music. They did know a thing or two about being marginalized by a lame white guy.

DC folks, do you remember Eva Cassidy?

Mr-Clark June 15, 2008 at 8:13 am

Jim Newell,

Does Mick Hucknall from “Simply Red” count? When “Holding Back the Years” debuted, everyone thought he was a black chick. (The video quickly proved otherwise.) Still got to give it up for President Bush, with the help of a speech writer, being able to secure his legacy (finally) with Black Mucic Month. (Here in San Francisco, I am sure it is African-American Music Month, as we are a little too politically correct.)

All time favorites that fit the bill: “I’m the One You Need” by Jody Watley and “That’s the Way Love Goes” by Janet. (Miss Jackson, if you are nasty.) Oh, and “Secret Rendezvous” by Karyn White…the best of the best.

I guess I gravitate towards black women than men…oh well!

Sincerely and respectfully,

Mr. Clark

Joey Ratz June 15, 2008 at 6:03 pm

For some reason, I initially thought W was talking about Black Metal. He seems like a bit of a closeted Satanist, just like his VP.

[re=16405]AudicityofHope[/re]: Speaking of Satanic forces… Repulsive stuff. And so many links I don’t want to click on.
