Op-Ed Columnist, Washington Post Writers GroupLIKE TEABAGGING A BEANIE BABY: “About these Obama Haters. They are apparently led by the CNN star Glenn Beck. I have not heard of him, but my tastes run more toward the BBC. His gimmick, they say, is to imitate the character from the classic 1970s comedy Network. If so, good for him and kudos on his success. But does he base his shtick on unsavory recollections of our shameful national past?” [AOL Political Machine]

Coddling the anti-Obama crowd is a bad idea. It’ll spoil them, and only make them more inclined to protest in December when we cancel Christmas. And oh, what an Airing of Grievances that will turn out to be.

Lascauxcaveman April 21, 2009 at 1:28 am

Too much ?????!!!!???!! and not enough !!1!!!1(11911!!!.

I don’t think your AOL playmates are going to get this one, Ken.

(But WTF, it wasn’t as bad as our lame cricket captions today.)

Voyou Charmant April 21, 2009 at 1:33 am

comments at 1:34 EST are well thought out.

If you really want to see the depth of the inanity this guy inspires, you need only spend a few minutes at his 912 site, perusing the vent section.

An endless parade of birthers, secret muslim detectives, and conspiracy nuts, with a nice glaze of racism. They make the paultards seem reasonable and thoughtful, and Beck makes Sean Hannity seem like a Nobel Prize winner.

It is sad beyond belief.

mr. wunnerful April 21, 2009 at 1:46 am

Glen Beck? Yeah, I Fucked him.

jennx April 21, 2009 at 2:36 am

dude. beck’s on fox now.

“Ken, you bitter, ignorant, blaspheming, liberal, schmuck, homo loving, nigra defending, fascist, Nazi, dingleberry writer thingy guy with teh words about Becks, like Glin is not the most intelgent man on cable news radio, you coyuld only hope o be as greats as he is. You’re going to burn i nhells for the badness hippocratically spewed at George Bush, the decider and safetyer. Of to the concentration camps with us?”

AOL: a place wingnuts think means absent without leave. Good times.
Incidentally, my sibling says you’re totally doable. My sibling looks a lot like that guy from Tokio Rose, or is that the twin sister?

Is late. Druk go crash now.

Mel_David April 21, 2009 at 3:20 am

So Ken, at what point did you decide to start using your AOL column specifically to troll AOL wingnuts?

Joshua Norton April 21, 2009 at 3:26 am

His gimmick, they say, is to imitate the character from the classic 1970s comedy Network.

Actually his “gimmick” is that he thinks he IS that character. When he was with CNN he used to think he was Lou Dobbs. I think it depends on his dosage…..

mr. wunnerful April 21, 2009 at 4:04 am

It was not Glenns first time

[re=294810]SayItWithWookies[/re]: ” December when we cancel Christmas. And oh, what an Airing of Grievances that will turn out to be.” Followed by “Feats of Strength”? Finally, a Festivus for the rest of us?

can’t he be our Ted Baxter?

Custerwolf April 21, 2009 at 6:31 am

Glenn’s mad as hell and he’s……well, uh – let’s just leave it at that.

Custerwolf April 21, 2009 at 6:34 am

“Wonkette.com, the Washington website of ideas”

That has a nice ring to it. I like it.

Itsjustme April 21, 2009 at 7:47 am

Ken: I am terribly disappointed in you. I was reading the comments on AOL as I was having my FOLGERS and realized that you are not drinking of the Obama Kool-aid, as you are now drinking “lates.” “Lates” like I have a Latez night and a sadz?

Numbat Dundee April 21, 2009 at 9:00 am

Ken Layne writes words. He gets them in the right order. Every sentence contains a verb. He uses irony. He wears a beard but it not a member of ZZ Top.
He is unamerican.

[re=294810]SayItWithWookies[/re]: The Religious Right’s role model, O. Cromwell, abolished Christmas in the 1640s. That’s why Thanksgiving Day was invented.

I’m mad as hell, but I will keep debasing myself for a paycheck!

norbizness April 21, 2009 at 9:29 am

Given your gig at AOL and with the quality of that particular commentariat, I’m guessing you were a 19th century Bavarian goat-teaser or Appalachian bear-baiter in a previous life.

lovethebomb April 21, 2009 at 9:31 am

I think what we have here is a failure to communicate. Ken was making an admiral effort to link the teabaggers with the grievances of the underclass, no small task given that they were protesting a 3 point hike in the top marginal tax rate. In reality, the rates are resetting due to a sunset clause. The portrayal of teabaggers as belonging to the usual rabble who make up this sort of public nuisance, he is underscoring the absurdity of their protest.

Going deeper, he suggests racism may also play a role, but equivocates, targeting one of the many insane clowns on Fox. That the teabaggers are an astroturf phenomena, manipulated and herded into mobilizing on behalf of billionaires and big business, is further emphasized by noting they merely represent the unleashed id of the anti-Obama subset of voters who cannot deal with losing power.

they merely represent the unleashed id of the anti-Obama subset of voters who cannot deal with losing power.

See e.g. Cheney, Dick.

Zadig April 21, 2009 at 9:46 am

I swore long ago not to read any comment threads on sites that aren’t designated “safe”, because it poisons the brain. But I make an exception to Ken’s AOL comment threads, because they are just too damn magical.

dijetlo April 21, 2009 at 9:47 am

“Mr. Lane, you evil hippie, ”
I love the bitters. Like fine church bells, you need only rap them lightly with reality and ring all day.

Too Lazy To Sign In April 21, 2009 at 9:48 am

[re=294825]Mel_David[/re]: Ken’s wingnut baiting is one of the highlights of my week. I look forward to it.

Thanks Ken!

Naked Bunny with a Whip April 21, 2009 at 10:08 am

Guh. Why for I read AOL comments? Me am melted brain, also?

TCDang April 21, 2009 at 10:58 am

[re=294893]Too Lazy To Sign In[/re]: [Sigh] I used to love reading the comments, too. Unfortunately, I can no longer tell the genuine nuts who rant about Ken’s column from the Wonkette impostors. I yearn for the genuine trolls.

Mustang April 21, 2009 at 11:10 am

No fair Ken Layne. I already spend a quarter of my day reading Wonkette comments. Now I’ve got to read the highly enjoyable AOL comments as well. I am severely underemployed, but still.

Baconbits April 21, 2009 at 2:44 pm

oh, how i love this one:

Guess the left (I don’t use the term Liberal anymore, they don’t represent “liberal” by definition anymore) believes in the 2 nd admendment when it is applied to them only.!!

High school government class FAIL!

LittlePig April 21, 2009 at 2:45 pm

[re=295070]american mutt[/re]: These (native) AOL folks must all be paraplegic, because how else can you not tell when your leg is being blatantly pulled?

Wonketteers dance about them left and right, and they just don’t get it.

President Beeblebrox April 21, 2009 at 3:14 pm

[re=294854]FaunceyGardner[/re]: That has to be fake. No human being could possibly write like that, amirite? Uh… yeah. Right. No one except for the 22% of Murikans who think Bush Jr. was a Great President. Now that is genaside I can believe in.

Bruno April 21, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I am dismayed that the article did not mention the beloved Jade Goody’s recent passing. She is the hero to the racist proletariat in Englande.

May she be reborn as a possessed daughter of Bobby Jindal.

Bruno April 21, 2009 at 8:35 pm

[re=295267]Baconbits[/re]: Well to his (shocking?) credit, he does understand the ‘Merikan use of the word Liberal is totally flawed. But he’s still a ‘tard.

[re=294861]Numbat Dundee[/re]: Can someone please please explain the ZZTop, AC/DC and why ‘heavy metal’ is real american while at the same time spitting on wholesome christian values?

Or is this just one of those things you don’t question like the bible or calling your wife a cunt.
