BEN ALI, R.I.P.: Sad news for locals, as well as Kwame Kilpatrick: “WASHINGTON – Ben Ali, the founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl diner, a landmark in Washington’s black business and entertainment district and a frequent stop for politicians and celebrities, has died. He was 82.” [AP]

Don’t order the ribs there.

Humpback October 8, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Are we supposed to make jokes about this?

SomeNYGuy October 8, 2009 at 4:06 pm

I hear there will be a 21 gun salute at the funeral, but without guns.

Extemporanus October 8, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Godspeed Ben! Make sure you remind Jesus that your delicious chili can stain like a motherfucker!

And speaking of God, thank Him that Bob Smyth, the founder of Bob’s Oatmeal Bowl diner, a landmark in Washington’s white lobbyist and red light district, is still alive and open for business. Pray the same fate does not befall Bob that befell the dearly departed Ben.

[re=429894]SomeNYGuy[/re]: Is that like a Bronx cheer, minus the cheer?

wx insider October 8, 2009 at 4:15 pm

I just threw up a little in my mouth… as a sign of respect. RIP Ben

[re=429900]Extemporanus[/re]: Failed fart joke. I should have worked on it some more.

[re=429891]Humpback[/re]: No, no, no, humpy, just a glib comment about death panels and taxes and moose chili. Jim is just challenging you as to what is sacrosanct and your ability to respond.

As a sign of respect to Ben, D.C.’s movers and shakers are all invited by Sylvia, to go fuck themselves.

Jukesgrrl October 8, 2009 at 4:22 pm

[re=429908]SomeNYGuy[/re]: No, I totally got it. Mine was an homage to Ben’s beloved dutch oven as well.

proudgrampa October 8, 2009 at 4:26 pm

I like chili.

Lionel Hutz Esq. October 8, 2009 at 4:29 pm

So, “Goin’ to Ben’s Chili Bowl” is not just an euphemism for anal sex in DC?

McDuff October 8, 2009 at 4:29 pm

A good man dies and Wonkette has to link him with Bush via that particular picture? At long last, Wonkette, have you no decency?

magic titty October 8, 2009 at 4:30 pm

GWB is working damn hard to stay in the lines there.

Extemporanus October 8, 2009 at 4:33 pm

[re=429940]magic titty[/re]: Yeah, he’s much better at doing them.

Is W writing in Arabic there? I knew 9/11 was an inside job.

[re=429932]Lionel Hutz Esq.[/re]: No, but Ben Dover is.

Well, some things in life are more important than others, and I’d say that Ben of the Chili Bowl is far more important than Bachmann or Palin. Avatque vale.

Goodbye,

As long as Ben’s Chili Bowl survives and uses your recipes correctly your legacy lives on.

We’ll miss you.

I have a confession to make: I grew up in the DC suburbs, and my parents met at AU, but I never heard of Ben’s Chili Bowl or half-smokes until I read about them here on Wonkette.

But still, I haz a sad.

Speaking of Kwame Kilpatrick, he’s been pleading poverty for his restitution and the county prosecutor is tired of his shit and recently ordered him to realease all of his financial information in an X-number of days or his ass is going back to jail.

His lawyer recently remarked: “She (county prosecutor) would have preferred that Mr. Kilpatrick is sitting in a cardboard box on Woodward Avenue living in garbage cans.”

Little does he know how little of an exaggeration that is.

Can we now gentrify this blight on U ?

A moment of silence for Ben Ali.

Thanks for starting, opening, running and maintaining one of the best places in D.C.!

Condolences to Mr. Ali’s family.

Ben Ali will be missed, but never forgotten.

Everyone should go on down to Ben’s Chili Bowl in the next few days and order some food in his honor.
