THE MURTHA IS DEAD, THE MURTHA IS DEAD: Whoa hey: “Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), 77, a Vietnam veteran who staunchly supported military spending and became a master of pork-barrel politics, died today following gallbladder surgery at Virginia Hospital Center.” THERE, HAPPY NOW, REPUBLICANS? He may have been corrupt, but at least he stood up when not many else would on the Iraqinam mess.

THERE, HAPPY NOW, REPUBLICANS?

Why yes, yes they are. Just listen to “outhousepatrol” over at Free Republic:

curmudge February 8, 2010 at 3:19 pm

Meh, he’ll probably still get re-elected.

rambone February 8, 2010 at 3:19 pm

If only my obituary in the Post could be written with half that tact.

Cape Clod February 8, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Is Jean Schmitt going to give the eulogy?

queeraselvis v 2.0 February 8, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Any chance that Steve King or WALNUTS will be undergoing gallbladder surgery any time soon?

RoscoePColtraine February 8, 2010 at 3:22 pm

The only reason I ever heard of him was because he had the nutz to take on the chicken hawks, Dick-less Cheney chiefly among them. He had the street cred, and he used it to call bullshit when few others would. There was nothing he could do from that moment on that could diminish my admiration for him.

I haz a little sad today.

ForTheTurnstiles February 8, 2010 at 3:23 pm

[re=509428]user-of-owls[/re]: So Murtha needed to make peace with God for besmirching the honor of our US Marines by doing what exactly? These self-righteous assholes are the worst kind of assholes.

hedgehog February 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Murtha’s “racist”, “redneck” constituents are very sad.

Ducksworthy February 8, 2010 at 3:29 pm

[re=509438]ForTheTurnstiles[/re]: Suggesting that Marines who shoot unarmed prisoners were’nt really his kind of Marines.

Larry McAwful February 8, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Republicans will rejoice in this because Republicans are always happen when a veteran dies. That’s when they get their wings.

Fox News Light February 8, 2010 at 3:30 pm

I thought I was going to be mean to Jim for making fun of someone who died five blocks from my state, but WAPO really wrote that? Man…see what years of service will getcha…

arewethereyet February 8, 2010 at 3:31 pm

As a vet, i’ll miss the guy. he watched our back when few others did. semper fi

Franklin Pierce & Pierce February 8, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I wonder if Ted Stevene’ obit will be handled with as much tact, or if he’ll be praised as a master of the Senate who helped form Alaska, etc.

KristaJulieva February 8, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Gallbladder surgery is the bane of Pennsylvanians. This death and Andy Warhol’s give me enough data points to prove it.

4tehlulz February 8, 2010 at 3:37 pm

JOHN MURTHA WAS A BAD MAN BECAUSE HE WOULDN’T SUCK OUR DICKS

/Post’d

donner_froh February 8, 2010 at 3:40 pm

[re=509457]arewethereyet[/re]: Very tough Marine, fought the good fight until the end.

Naked Bunny with a Whip February 8, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Don’t worry, he’ll regenerate into a younger body and a quirky new personality any time now.

President Beeblebrox February 8, 2010 at 3:42 pm

[re=509473]Naked Bunny with a Whip[/re]: But he still won’t be ginger.

Larry McAwful February 8, 2010 at 3:44 pm

[re=509463]Franklin Pierce & Pierce[/re]: They won’t need to mention Stevens’ scandals. All they have to do is call him “Republican” and “scandal-plagued” is implied. Stevens’ surviving family might sue the Post for using the “Republican” epithet to describe their late, beloved relative, because they didn’t call Hitler a Republican in his obituary, so maybe the Stevens family will have a point.

american mutt February 8, 2010 at 3:45 pm

You know what? I guess I didn’t really want progress in America after all. Screw it.

Sussemilch February 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

“… and then the boy dies after his gall bladder operation and everybody in the village says, “How terrible.”

“And the zen master says ‘we’ll see.’”

“Of course not, he’s fucking dead. Of course it’s terrible.”

Aurelio February 8, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Dead from gall bladder surgery? Gall bladder surgery shouldn’t kill you. Those quacks at Virginia Hospital Center fucked up.

V572625694 February 8, 2010 at 3:59 pm

How does PA fill empty House seats? How can they get Santorum in there?

Jim89048 February 8, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I suggest the powers that be investigate the political party affiliation of the surgeons involved.

pampl February 8, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I don’t get the outpouring of grief. Even if you think it’s OK that he made a career out of taking money intended for the poor and giving it to his district, the fact remains that he was a walking advertisement for the conservative attitude towards government spending. By all non-partisan measures he was one of the most corrupt people in Washington, and he was also one of the most responsible for the continuous inflation of defense spending. The USA and liberalism in particular are both far better off now that he’s dead and the only thing to regret is how long he managed to live.

JMP February 8, 2010 at 4:03 pm

[re=509463]Franklin Pierce & Pierce[/re]: Like Richard Nixon, he’ll be “controversial”. Prediction: Even this won’t stop Rush, Hannity, O’Reilley et al. from calling it “even the liberal Washington Post..”

Bearbloke February 8, 2010 at 4:05 pm

[re=509496]Aurelio[/re]: Maybe his doctor went to the Santorum School of Medicine…

Bearbloke February 8, 2010 at 4:08 pm

[re=509508]pampl[/re]: Despite his old-school graft and involvement in ABSCAM, Murtha gets credit for finding the bollocks to speak up against this awful war that’s killing your economy and democracy.

slappypaddy February 8, 2010 at 4:13 pm

well, shit. with the dems losing the senate–having now, what is it, a 59-seat minority to the repubs 41-seat majority–and now losing the house, since the death of this one fellow certainly means the repubs regain control of the house, what’s the point? barry will be lucky if the repubs fund even a single ribbon-cutting ceremony for him to attend.

El Pinche February 8, 2010 at 4:20 pm

[re=509428]user-of-owls[/re]: Thats okay. When Rush Limbaugh dies of syphilis from bestial loving a feral hog, I will make a pinata in the shape of Rush and throw a party. The repugs get real happy when a soldier dies, they call it “supporting the troops.”

Paul Tardy February 8, 2010 at 4:34 pm

He more or less voted for everything including Iraq authorization. Some of the kiddos in his Appalachian district ended up over there so he had to act upset. His fancy health insurance didn’t saved him, but I guess the hospital will not be sending his family a bill. He is survived by many plaques on public buildings named after him. Does anyone know if a 747 can land at John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, I have Flight Simulator all fired up?

gurukalehuru February 8, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Like Lyndon Johnson, Murtha’s life gets mixed reviews.
However, there is such a preponderance these days of evil politicians whose graves I will, at least metaphorically, piss on, that I prefer to remember the John Murtha who came out against Bush and Bush’s war.
RIP.

Jukesgrrl February 8, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Republicans are writing his eulogy on their hands.

President Beeblebrox February 8, 2010 at 5:26 pm

[re=509546]Paul Tardy[/re]: A 747 will land at any airport you want it to in MSFS… whether you can stop on the runway in time to avoid skidding off is another question. :)

Murtha was cut from the same cloth as “Bud” Shuster, one district over in Altoona. Bud was a Republican, but they both had the same attitude: bring home as much money as possible and get crap named after them. Johnstown had Murtha, Altoona had Shuster.

Shit, Bud got funding to turn US 220 into Interstate 99, also known as the “Bud” Shuster Memorial Highway (which name it was given before he died), which will someday be a huge-normous interstate highway extending all the way from Cumberland, MD to State College, PA… and he put language in the appropriation bill requiring that it be called I-99 even though it is contrary to the usual highway numbering scheme because, well, he was Bud and didn’t give a fuck.

Jukesgrrl February 8, 2010 at 5:50 pm

[re=509610]President Beeblebrox[/re]: As a former Pennsylvanian, I’ve traveled the Bud Shuster Highway and driven over bridges brought to us by John Murtha. Federal building projects have been Pennsylvania’s welfare program since before I was born. I grew up thinking that’s what Congresspersons were for. I’m now in Arizona, scratching my head and wondering why the pols here spend all their time shoving religion down people’s throats and not bringing home any bacon. While McCain complains about pork, other people are taking it home in the form of jobs for their constituents. Right or wrong, it’s how the system works at present. And why you would constantly reelect someone who didn’t work that system to your state’s advantage is the Mystery of the Desert.

clientnumber8 February 8, 2010 at 5:56 pm

America’s favorite hero-crook.

HuddledMass February 8, 2010 at 6:22 pm

John Murtha, Ted Kennedy, Tip O’Neill = politicians who helped their constituents, consistently and often. Could be a lot worse, I tellz ya!

EdFlinstone February 8, 2010 at 6:35 pm

[re=509610]President Beeblebrox[/re]: [re=509610]President Beeblebrox[/re]: Bud and Ann Eppard were as crooked as they come.

PAbitter February 8, 2010 at 7:08 pm

[re=509508]pampl[/re]: apparently you’ve never been to PA, if you think that “the poor” and “his district” are completely separate categories.
Yeah, he was a corrupt schmuck, but he was so good at it it was fun to watch and you could always tell yourself that hey, he wasn’t in your district, so you didn’t have to worry about voting against him.

Texan Bulldoggette February 8, 2010 at 7:27 pm

You know it’s a bad political climate for Dems when you’d rather die than run for re-election.

hotdog February 8, 2010 at 8:57 pm
skaboomizzy February 8, 2010 at 11:02 pm

I grew up in what is now part of Murtha’s district. Let me tell you, those people are now completely screwed.

There hasn’t been anything resembling a functional economy there since about 1950, it has one of the highest average ages of any part of America along with some of the highest rates of free/reduced school lunches, teen pregnancy, child poverty and adult illiteracy. Federal money is about the only thing keeping rural western PA from sinking into complete oblivion and without a senior member of Congress like Murtha to keep bringing it in, they are finished.

Chi-town_Vinny February 9, 2010 at 12:17 am

Murtha gave the Democrats a voice opposing the Iraq war when they had lost their way. His service to his country only adds to his legacy. May he rest in peace.

Pelagius February 9, 2010 at 2:24 am

Cowards cut and run, Marines never do.

El Pinche February 9, 2010 at 10:39 am

[re=509496]Aurelio[/re]: You’re absolutely correct. Apparently the doctors fucked up.

Aurelio February 9, 2010 at 12:46 pm

[re=509516]Bearbloke[/re]: “Rep. John Murtha’s sudden death Monday may have been due to a surgical error, according to a source close to a congressman. Murtha was admitted to the hospital on Jan 31. after suffering an infection resulting from gallbladder surgery. He died days later.

“This should have been a really simple surgery. Laparoscopic gallbladder removal usually is no big deal,” reported CNN’s senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen. “Many times people don’t even get admitted to the hospital.”

But a source told CNN that the congressman may have died after his intestines were nicked during the procedure.”
