The 2008 Rumor Mill Is in Full Churn
The next presidential election is still an eternity away, but it’s already an extremely popular topic of conversation — perhaps because it’s far more interesting than the day-to-day machinations of Congress. We’ve been hearing interesting rumors about possible 2008 contenders — and we’re not just talking about the quixotic candidacy of Mike Gravel (although the folks we’re hearing about now aren’t exactly frontrunners either).
On the Democratic side, we hear that Bill Richardson (D-NM) is hosting several top political consultants at the Governor’s mansion this week, as part of a two-day retreat to “refine his national message” leading up to his 2008 presidential bid. Thoughts on how to deal with the mini-scandal over his exaggeration of his baseball prowess, plus that whole “inappropriate touching” thing, are most welcome.
And on the Republican side, we hear that Tom Ridge — former DHS Secretary and Pennsylvania Governor — is thinking about a possible White House run. If the rumors about him are true (and not satirical), the rigors of the campaign trail may not gel well with his obsessive-compulsive tendencies. A presidental run can involve lots of furry animal petting.

Idea for Richardson:
"Who HASN'T been confused once or twice about whether they were drafted by a major league baseball team?"
A serious Tom Ridge campaign might be the most amusing thought I've had all week. The man responsible for the terror alert color system?! The Presidency?!
I'd give that a huge "R-E-D"

Okay, where's the dirt on Mike Gravel? The guy has been the only announced 2008 candidate for like 24 hours now, and you've said nary a word? What, no good comedy in a candidate whose platform centers on national referrenda and a national sales tax? Come on! There's gold in them thar hills!
TOM RIDGE, before he was governor, was in the House of Representatives and served on the then Banking Committee (Financial Institutions). Always very much involved. He ran everyday at lunch time with his top staff. He'a a former Marine and Vietnam veteran. MIKE GRAVEL was a U.S. Senator eons ago. Very liberal at the time and for the time. Dirt on the guy--it's probably part of the perma-frost by now. His name recognition must be in the low single digits and thats among Alaskan Democrats.

Talent's looking pretty thin these days eh? Speaking of looking pretty thin, how many of these losers have to drift out to sea before Jebby the Hut gets back into it?
