I am firmly convinced that the father away from the original source of power and-or wealth one gets, the more worthless they become.
The original person probably busted his ass, kissed all the right ass and generally worked until the day they dropped dead. They got rich and powerful in the process.
The first generation following probably observed the elder's habits and approach and learned from it, or at least mimic'd it. However, they probably got to go to college, paid for, and had a lot more nice things to play with and do. 25% worthless.
The second generation is born into privilege and wealth and all the toys and such. They see their elder work, but not at the level of the first. They go to private schools or really good public schools, never get in trouble 'cause they will always be bailed out and they go to the colleges and universities where "like minded and well bred" people go. 50% worthless.
The third generation is simply spoon-fed and outright worthless. They have expectations of power and wealth based on nothing more than the status quo of what they have always known. 75% worthless.
After that, it just keeps getting worse and by this time, some start falling out of the tree via the looney bin, alcholism or some other vice that is only worsened by the availability of resources to take advantage of the habit.
Yes, there are exceptions to this rule, but they are just that, exceptions. It's the 80/20 thing. 80% of the wealth/power aristocracy will fall into this category, perhaps 20% will do a little better.
Tell me this doesn't explain our Dear Leader and the demise of many of the "old money" families...

With the exception of those sunglasses, which gay guys in Tennessee might very well wear, Montecore is right - you can spot this cowboy-hatted, sleeveless flannel kinda guy at Remington's five happy-hours a week. That said, I'd hit it. Woof!

AfghanVet -- This is why Jefferson was right. We need a 100% estate tax. Everyone starts at zero. (Of course, Jefferson inherited his land from his dad, who was a much better farmer, but he was always sort of a do-as-say-not-as-I-do kinda fella.)
