Dennis Quaid’s Most Subtle Performance Since Jaws 3-D

Last night we sat down for the Golden Globes, the one Hollywood award show almost worth watching. Mostly because the stars are drunk. In some ways the best part of the show is the red carpet walkup. Sure, it provides the mandatory observance of how low-cut Scarlett Johansen’s dress will be, but even better are the uncomfortable moments between celebrities and the Nancy O’Dells of the universe sent to track them down for interviews.
There wasn’t much humor or grandstanding during this year’s Globes. Not surprisingly, Will Farrell had the best facial reactions to the pan cam while Steve Carell was funny/sweet joking with his wife on stage. George Clooney won early and got in his Jack Abramoff joke. When Clooney dedicated his award to Abramoff the crowd was mostly silent. Realizing most had no idea who or what he was referencing, Clooney added, “What kind of parents would name their kid ‘Jack’ when his name ends in “off.”
Throughout the show, presenters would introduce a clip for one of the best picture nominees. Dennis Quaid got to introduce eventual winner Brokeback Mountain. After a few platitudes about the film’s depth and meaning, Quaid explained the film’s premise, “It rhymes with chick flick.”
