It’s Okay, Di Fi, We Like Phantom Planet Too
This just in, courtesy of a tipster:
During Judiciary Committee Mark-up this morning, Dianne Feinstein's cellphone went off while she was giving her statement on comprehensive immigration reform.
Her ringtone? “California,” the theme from “The OC.”
Oh, and the funniest part was that she didn't notice her phone ringing, despite Sen. Durbin's effort to point it out to her!
This is not entirely surprising. While Di-Fi is certainly one of the most well-spoken — and well-dressed — members of the Judiciary Committee, she can be a bit of a space cadet at times.
But there is an irony in Sen. Feinstein discussing immigration reform to the tune of a song with these lyrics:
We've be on the run
Driving in the sun
Looking out for number one
California, here we come
Here they come, indeed.

While I have never seen the show nor heard the theme song, the lyrics sound alarmingly similar to the Al Jolson ditty "California Here I Come":
California here I come,
Right back where I started from,
Where bowers of flowers bloom in the sun,
Each morning at dawning
Birdies sing an' ev'rything:
A sun-kiss'd miss said, "don't be late,"
That's why I can hardly wait,
Open up that golden gate,
California here I come
Obviously Di Fi knows this; whether the OC legions do or not may be questionable.

the phantom planet cover has changed the lyrics some. no bowers of flowers, but yes to 'california here i come.'

Since it WAS a Judiciary Committee Mark-up and DiFi WAS in the middle of an immigration reform soliloquy, I think it would have been appropriate to include the next verse:
I mean, "Hustlers grab your guns/The shadow weighs a ton/Driving down the 101" kind of has "Chuck Grassley, this one's for you!" written all over it.

> the funniest part was that she didn't notice her phone ringing
Shit. Okay, I'll just pretend it's not mine.
Everyone's looking. It's okay, pretend you can't hear it. Can't hear the ringing, can't hear the ringing...
Oh crap. "California!" I'm totally busted. (Just keep talking.) How stupid does this look? (Just pretend it's not happening.)
This. Moment. Is. Never.Going. To. End.
Hey! Dick Durbin! Go fuck yourself!
(Asshole.)
OH OH, thank GOD. It's finally over.
How do I turn it off without anyone noticing?"
