Let’s Hope, For the Sake of Our Sanity, That the Bottom Falls Out of This Blog Thing Before ‘08
Warner: I’m looking forward to cynically and half-assedly exploiting this whole “internet” thing. And I heard from the CIA that “a lot of blogs have become very big on the internet.”

Can we please just put an end to this whole blog thing?
Seriously... it was cute when it was a bunch of graduate school drop-outs sitting around in their PJs debating the merits of HR. 2130. But now we have crusty old people getting "hip" by "engaging in constructive"... "dialogue"... with the "community"... ZZzzzzzz......

Please don't let Mark Warner turn all creepy and Brian Doyle-like. Today he discovers Daily Kos, tomorrow it's MySpace!

Aren't "blog" and "constructive dialogue" an oxymoron, or at least a Bushism? No doubt he will receive some really neat new ideas like what's going on in Omaha with the Council thinking it would really be a good idea to have "three separate but equal" geographic school districts--one for whites, one for blacks and one for Spanish and Native American Indians. I guess the Asians have to settle for home schooling. Or the other neat new idea of allowing the citizenry to carry concealed weapons with real bullets. Oh, I forgot that already exists in Mark Warner's Virginia. At the end of the comment box he may want to allow the constructive dialoguers to post their Visa account number and expiration date for a small donation to help maintain the cost of spreading these new great ideas on saving the Republic. Her Majesty's QE II blogger page--it exists--is probably a better read.

I think you have to give the guy points for exploring the Internets. It shows some true initiative. After all, the Web is where the dollars are. Ask Dr. Dean.
I expect that when Warner runs for president, he will follow the lead of a truely ground-breaking candidate and Internets innovator, Kimberly Williamson Butler, by superimposing his photo in front of Disneyworld's Hall of Presidents. It will remind visitors of his Virginia roots.

I'm all for politicos exploring the Internets, but how about pumping a little life into these missives? This reads like a freshly lobotomized teenager's first foray back into the wilds of communication.

Actually, the internet isn't really where all the dollars are. It's where some of the dollars are some of the time, and it can certainly supplement, but never fully replace a traditional fundraising operation. It's also over-rated as an organizational tool (just ask Dean's IA staffers about the empty school buses.)
The biggest reason Warner (and eventually all the rest of the 08-ers) feels the need to talk to the blog people is so that they don't feel slighted, and thus won't run around saying horrible things about him.
It's the exact same reason why candidates go to barbecues for tiny local democratic clubs that talk a big game, but that they know will end up doing a shitty job raising money and turning out votes, and bitch about how nobody listens to their great ideas. While the internet will certainly change the way some things are done in politics, bloggers are less of a revolution than just another set of asses to kiss. Us included.
