Hahahaha!!! Yes!! From hit with hammers to driving hammered. Roll Call’s having server issues, but here’s the meat of it:
According to a letter sent by Officer Greg Baird, acting chairman of the USCP FOP, the wreck took place at approximately 2:45 a.m. Thursday when Kennedy’s car, operating with its running lights turned off, narrowly missed colliding with a Capitol Police cruiser and smashed into a security barricade at First and C streets Southeast.
“The driver exited the vehicle and he was observed to be staggering,” Baird’s letter states. Officers approached the driver, who “declared to them he was a Congressman and was late to a vote. The House had adjourned nearly three hours before this incident. It was Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy from Rhode Island.”
Baird wrote that Capitol Police Patrol Division units, who are trained in driving under the influence cases, were not allowed to perform basic field sobriety tests on the Congressman. Instead, two sergeants, who also responded to the accident, proceeded to confer with the Capitol Police watch commander on duty and then “ordered all of the Patrol Division Units to leave the scene and that they were taking over.”
Baird said he had been advised that after the officers departed, Capitol Police “House Division officials” gave Kennedy a ride home.

Seriously, we shoulda seen this coming: the guy can barely stay awake when the House is in session — you ever watch him in C-Span? His hands shake. We swear.

He knew that if he said he was late to a vote, he wouldn't be arrested. Pretty smart for a guy who was supposedly hammered.

When I spent the night in the klinker after being arrested by Capitol Police, they told me that they handle a lot of problems involving members of Congress and alcohol.

The best part of this whole story is that the guy's first drunken instincts were to pull out the Constitutional guns.
And it happened about a stone's throw from my house - Why, oh why could I not have been loitering outside with a digital camera???

Chris, sadly, the value of a photograph of a drunken member of the Kennedy family is pretty low. Supply, Demand, Etc.
Cunningham, Hookers, Kennedy, Drunk, Delay Ney Jefferson and a dozen others, Bribes... and that's just the ones who got in trouble this year. Dare I say it? I dare: BEST CONGRESS EVER!

Fair enough, Barnacle. But it still woulda been kinda nice to at least be able to laugh at the "I've got to vote" line.
Best Congress ever? It's a bit premature to jump to conclusions (no duels, circa 1804)... but the 110th Congress isn't over yet!
