Reading About Katherine Harris Is Good for You

Here’s another original photograph of Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), courtesy of a Sunshine State tipster:

Yeah, we know, we just gave you a bunch of Katherine Harris pics earlier today. But when it comes to our Katy, there’s no such thing as too much. Consider this reader testimonial:

I have a girlfriend in Sarasota who needed some solitary time. The usuaI “what should she do next” thoughts. I saw your articles on Ms. Harris and knew this would draw her out of her funk — and it did! What a terrific therapeutic tool. Thanks Wonkette.
In therapy we talk of “best outcomes.” KH provided this, so please keep posting anything about her, even if it is not funny. Absolutely everything about her is therapeutic.

We couldn’t agree more. We will continue to perform the public service of following Katherine Harris’s every move.

Take Her Out to the Ball Game

Katherine Harris’s enthusiasm for taking pictures with her camera phone, as seen in this photo, is nothing new.

Last night, Team Wonkette attended the 45th Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game. And so did our favorite congresswoman: Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL).

We’ll have a more detailed write-up of the game, along with additional pictures, later today. For now, to whet your appetite, we offer you a few photos of Katy H. at the game.

Check them out, after the jump (or just click here).

Compare this photo and the one right above it. Katy only flashes her pearly whites for Asian dudes — white guys get the pursed lips.

“Um, Congresswoman Harris, here are the sodas you asked for.”

Wonkette Field Trip: A Pilgrimage to the Supremes (Part Two)

The TV people were faked out by the Court today too. And unlike us, they brought all this crap with them.

Earlier today, we brought you the first installment of pictures from our field trip to the Supreme Court this morning. We thought it would be the final day of the Term. We thought wrong.

Now, the rest of our photo essay. Check out the pics, after the jump.

After the proceedings were finished, we wandered outside, where we took lots and lots of photographs. Here are a few of them.

They don’t call it One First Street for nothing.

The view from the courthouse steps: the Capitol. Ugh, those clowns…

It ain’t easy being green. Hey — are those flip-flops?

Is that girl about to sit on the other girl’s lap? That’s HOTT.

“Are we having fun yet?”

Yes, those are definitely flip-flops. Someone call Robin Givhan!!!

The flip-flop bandits, leaving the scene of the crime.

Wonkette Field Trip: A Pilgrimage to the Supremes (Part One)

Today Wonkette took a field trip to the U.S. Supreme Court. We were all excited, ‘cause we — like many others — thought it might be the last day of the Term.

The Court would hand down decisions in all its big-ticket cases — like the Texas redistricting case, and the Guantanamo Bay detainee case. Maybe a justice would announce his or her retirement. We might be present for the making of history.

As it turned out, the SCOTUS faked us out. Moving into overtime, they announced that tomorrow will be the last day of the Term. Perhaps their recent night at the movies caused the justices to fall behind in their work.

Nevertheless, our visit to the Court was worthwhile. Even though the decision in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld will have to wait until tomorrow, we did get to watch Justice Kennedy try to explain the confusing raft of opinions in the Texas redistricting case. And we swooned when the hunky Chief Justice started talkin’ dirty to us, about Article 36 of the Vienna Convention on “Consular Relations”…

After the jump, part one of our two-part photo essay on our day with the Supremes.

Update: Part Two is available here.

To enter the building, you have make it past this guy. As you can see, he’s fast on the draw.

Then you have to put your camera and cell phone in this coin-operated locker — ‘cause Justice Souter said cameras will end up in the courtroom “over [his] dead body,” and he’s still alive. The locker costs twenty-five cents, which is kinda lame — so don’t leave home without your laundry money. (But there is a change machine in case you forget.)

What the Supreme Court shares in common with an hourly-rate motel. Your fancy new flip phone got stolen? Nino doesn’t want to hear about it.

Next to the locker room, there appears to be a Supreme Court seamstress (if this sign is to be believed). If you rip your judicial robe after snagging it on a doorknob, talk to her.

Walking the halls of justice.

This is one of several courtyards, where the famed Supreme Court “happy hours” take place each Thursday. After Justice Ginsburg has that third beer, there’s no telling what she might do.

Your tax dollars at work: those damn activist judges get elevators of SOLID GOLD.

And last night, they went to this great Christian rock concert…

If you don’t like that whole “judicial review” thing, take it up with this guy.

Check back later today, when we’ll post the rest of our pictures.

We may quote from your testimonial, but we’ll keep you anonymous.

Capitol Hill intern coordinators: None of these hotties nominated herself, so please don’t fire them or otherwise fault them for being in this contest. Don’t hate them because they’re beautiful!

Hill Intern Hotties: The <strike>Boys</strike> Men

On Tuesday, we asked for nominations in our Capitol Hill Hotties contest. You made some sizzling submissions, we carefully considered them all, and today we unveil the official nominees.

In our White House Hotties contest, we opened the polls in the women’s race first. This time around, we’ll start off with the men.

The male contenders, with photos, appear below. More info about them, including where they are interning and reader testimonials, will follow. If you know any of these fine fellows and have thoughts (or photos) to share, please email us (subject line: Hill Intern Hotties). We may quote from your testimonial, but we’ll keep you anonymous, unless you state otherwise.

Finally, a quick note to Capitol Hill intern coordinators. None of these hotties nominated himself, so please don’t fire them for appearing in this contest. It’s not their fault; some have hotness thrust upon them.

Update: The original version of this poll included Marc Grinberg and Scott Parkinson as contestants. After learning that neither is an intern, we removed them from the competition.

Further Update: The polls are now open on the women’s side. Click here to vote.

Meghan O'Sullivan: New Evidence of Her Hotness

Does Meghan O’Sullivan, President Bush’s deputy national security advisor, qualify as a hottie? We think so; but the point has been vigorously debated. See here and here (especially the reader comments).

But perhaps this issue can now be viewed as settled. An operative just sent us this photograph of O’Sullivan — a headshot from her modeling days:

Wow — very impressive. If voters in our recent White House Hotties contest had seen this photo, perhaps the results would have been different.

Times Photo Editors Are Killjoys

And maybe they read this blog. Yesterday we commended them for running this great photo and caption:

They subsequently replaced it with a different pic, in both the online and print versions:

Note the strategic migration of Fabrizi’s finger away from his coke-lovin’ nose, as well as the revision of the caption, in which reference to “cocaine” has been replaced by the generic term “drugs.”

Lame, lame, lame.

An Evening With Justice Alito: A Photo Essay

No, this isn’t a Benetton ad. Left to right: Grant Vinik; Jeannie Rhee; Jessie Liu; Justice Samuel Alito (duh); Robin Meriweather; and Anna-Marie Roop.

Last night, one-half of Wonkette attended the annual dinner of the Yale Law School Assocation of Washington, DC, at the National Press Club. The dinner honored Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., Yale Law School class of 1975, the newest member of the Supreme Court.

The proceedings were declared off the record, so we can’t tell you about Justice Alito’s thoughtful, erudite, and highly entertaining remarks. Nor can we share with you the fantastic conversations we had over dinner, at a star-studded table. All the journalists — and quasi-journalists — had to put away our notebooks for the night.

But no one said anything about cameras. So we took lots of photographs of the assembled legal luminaries — such as the picture shown above, in which Justice Alito “strikes a pose,” looking like a general about to head into battle.

Additional pictures — including photos of the evening’s other celebrity, Sen. Arlen Specter, Yale Law School class of 1956 — appear after the jump.
Ryan Bounds, chief of staff at the Office of Legal Policy, and Stacey Bennett, soon to be joining Kirkland & Ellis. He sure is tall, isn’t he?

White House Hotties: A Postscript

As promised, here’s our quick postscript on our White House Hotties contest. We’re going to close the loop on a few items and offer up some amusing addenda about the competition.

First, a special message to the reader who sent us this email, well after the polls closed: “Mi voto es por Paul Skoczylas.” Sorry, but we didn’t count your “voto.” In addition to being three hours late, it was excluded by our “English only” rule.

Second, in response to our question about the hotness of Josh McCoy, Ben Wilmoth’s unofficial campaign manager, we received a photograph of Josh. You can check it out after the jump.

Third, we received several additional pictures of the male hottie winner, David Copley. They also appear after the jump.

Finally, even though their candidate didn’t win, we have to give a Wonkette salute to the supporters of Emily House. “Team Emily” came up with the most innovative and creative campaign by far. Check out their blog here, their new T-shirt design here, and their latest campaign video here:

Additional statements from Team Emily, as well as an earlier campaign video, appear after the jump.

We had fun with the White House Hotties contest — and it seems like the Bushies did too. So check back soon, to learn about our next exciting hotties competition.

Here’s the photo of Josh McCoy; you can judge for yourself whether he was unfairly passed over. We think that he compares favorably to several of the nominees. (But then again, what do we know? Fran Townsend came in dead last among the female hotties.)

And here are the additional photos of Dave Copley, your number one White House hottie.

No, this wasn’t taken at Madame Tussauds.

Everyone loves a man in uniform!

Atop the rubble that was Al-Zarqawi’s not-so-safe-house.

Here’s the first campaign video crafted by Team Emily:

Finally, here’s an official statement from a representative of Team Emily:

Wonkette - First of all, we would like to point out that from the beginning Team Emily has gone on the record saying we are big fans of Mary Anne and know she had nothing to do with the vicious attacks on Emily from her fringe supporters.
Team Emily had a busy weekend campaigning/pursuing cirrhosis in earnest in Georgetown and at the Courage Cup (because if there is anything Team Emily loves more than charity events, it’s charity events that involve socially acceptable day drinking). Regrouping on Sunday, we opened the Texas Team Emily office where our professional media team (seriously) spent the weekend making a new t-shirt design (www.cafepress.com/teamemily) and also our first web ad (attached).
We have also assembled the Team Emily legal team that is ready to deploy and challenge the results if we feel there are irregularities. James A. Baker III is just a phone call away from coming up here to take command of the post election period.

Taylor Hughes won the contest by a sizable margin, so we believe that no legal challenge is warranted. But as for who should be viewed as the runner-up, ready to step in if Taylor is unable to fulfill her duties — or if nude photos of her surface in Penthouse, a la Vanessa Williams — there may be some dispute. After the polls closed, a mysterious extra vote for Mary Anne Calamas materialized. That vote turned a tie between House and Calamas into a one-vote victory for Mary Anne…

(We think it has something to do with the polling feature of Movable Type. This kind of problem has happened to us before.)

Team Party Crash: "The Good Fight" Book Party, Part Two

As we mentioned earlier, last night Team Wonkette found itself at the book party for Peter Beinart’s The Good Fight. The festivities took place at the elegant Georgetown home of Mark Penn and Nancy Jacobson, and numerous superstars attended — including Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Hillary Clinton chats it up with author Peter Beinart and his lovely wife, Diana Hartstein. Over Hillary’s shoulder: Third Way’s Matt Bennett.

A comprehensive report — plus more fabulous Liz Gorman photos — appears after the jump.

This truly was one of the best parties we’ve attended — and as you know, we go to a lot of them. It did require us to shower and leave our apartments, but all in all, it was worth it.

Author Peter Beinart and host Mark Penn (in jeans; it’s his party, he’ll wear what he wants to).

Venue: Excellent. Mark Penn and Nancy Jacobson — he’s Hillary’s pollster, and she’s John Edwards’s finance queen, as the Hotline points out — have a stunningly gorgeous home, as well as an impressive art collection. Most of the guests congregated on the patio and in the well-manicured side garden, replete with reflecting pool.

Part of Team Wonkette, accompanied by foolhardy FishBowler Patrick Gavin, <strike>took an unauthorized tour of the upstairs living quarters</strike> got lost upstairs on their way to the bathroom. (Intrepid Girl Reporter Liz Gorman was against it and went under protest/embarrassment.) The mischievous trio peeked into Mark Penn’s private study and left proof of their visit:

Starpower: Off the charts. Bill and Hillary Clinton — need we say more? (As previously noted, they came and left separately, and didn’t overlap — which was probably a good thing, considering the star-struck reactions they engendered individually.)

Even Hillary by herself would have lit up the heavens. To paraphrase JFK on Thomas Jefferson, “This is the most extraordinary collection of starpower in D.C. since the White House Correspondents’ dinner — with the possible exception of when Hillary dines alone.”

Of course, in addition to the Clintons, Penn, and Jacobson, there were lots of other boldface names. We were too busy drinking and devouring hors d’oeuvres, but the eagle-eyed Patrick Gavin spotted the following: Leon Panetta, the Newshour’s Anne Davenport, Alexander Barnes Dryer, Rita Braver, Kenneth Pollack, Andrea Koppel, William Galston, and Sen. Ron Wyden.

Marc Ambinder’s additions to the list of notables: “Andrei Cherny, the wunkerkind former Gore speechwriter / Kerry adviser whose new journal of ideas, Democracy, launches next week”; and “Doug Band, Clinton’s erstwhile and harried-looking senior travelling aide.”

Food: Excellent. A wide-ranging selection of delicious hors d’oeuvres, served in copious amounts throughout the evening. The offerings included asparagus in puff pastry; crackers topped with tomato, mozzarella, and pesto; and our personal favorite, crispy tortilla-like shells filled with a scrumptious southwestern chicken salad. The only disappointment were the miniature roast beef sandwiches.

Entertainment: Excellent. The formal part of the evening was brief — warm introductory remarks by Mark Penn, followed by Peter Beinart’s eloquent precis of his new book. But the conversation and the people-watching — including eavesdropping on conversations involving either Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton — were more enjoyable than pretty much any speech we’ve sat through this year.

Even conversations not involving the Clintons were amusing. One woman at the bar asked one of us who we were, where we worked, etc. She was familiar with Wonkette and asked how we learned about the party. We explained that we learned about it through a Harper Collins publicist, then said something about Peter’s agent.

The woman immediately turned to her husband and said, “See, Harold, Peter has an agent. You know, Harold wrote a book, but he doesn’t have an agent.” Her husband agreed that, yes, having an agent might be helpful.

If they were looking for a book agent, they came to the right party. Also in attendance: super-lawyer Robert Barnett of Williams & Connolly, who negotiated the eye-popping book deals for Bill and Hillary. Hopefully they caught him before he left!

EXCLUSIVE PICTURES of Lesley (daughter of Tom) Ridge’s wild, outta control graduation party at the White House!
The Unidentified Aide: Mystery Solved

Wow, you guys work fast. We show you some photos of Karl Rove and a mysterious hottie, whom the AP refers to as an “unidentified aide.” Within minutes, several of you inform us of her name: Taylor Hughes.

Does anyone know Ms. Hughes’s job title? And would anyone like to submit a brief testimonial on her behalf, so she can compete in our contest?

Update: According to the White House Office Staff List, Taylor A. Hughes is the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor. She earns $47,500 a year.

Who's That Girl?

Karl Rove is a lucky man — and not just because he’s escaped indictment in Plamegate. Check out this photo:

One of you asks: “Who’s the hot girl standing next to Rove?”

We second the question, and add one of our own: If she works with Karl Rove in the White House, why hasn’t she been nominated in our White House Hotties contest?

Team Party Crash: "The Good Fight" Book Party, Part One

Last night, Team Wonkette attended the book party for The Good Fight, the new book by Peter Beinart. On a perfect June evening, in the garden of Mark Penn and Nancy Jacobson’s Georgetown mansion, we rubbed shoulders with numerous luminaries — including Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Don’t believe us? Well, we have eyewitnesses: Marc Ambinder and Patrick Gavin. And photos:

Yes, of course she wore a pantsuit. This one was pea green.

Attention Patrick Healy: A tuxedo-clad Bill arrived separately from Hillary. Hillary left the premises at least 20 minutes prior to Bill’s arrival.

More great photos, by Intrepid Girl Reporter Liz Gorman, appear after the jump. A more detailed write-up of the party, with even more pictures, will follow shortly.

Evidence of Another White House Makeover

Is a comprehensive makeover a job requirement for women working at the White House? We previously showed you “before” and “after” photos of homeland security hottie Frances Townsend. And now we have evidence that Townsend’s chief competition for top White House hottie — deputy national security adviser Meghan O’Sullivan, lovingly profiled in yesterday’s Times — has transformed her look too.

As always, the good stuff — the photographic proof — appears after the jump.

Compare the two photos below. The top photo is the “before” picture: O’Sullivan during her pre-White House days at the Brookings Institution, sporting chic, short hair. The bottom photo is the “after” picture — O’Sullivan as she looks today, with a lustrous, fiery red mane.

The tipster who sent us the “before” photo opined that it was unflattering to O’Sullivan. But we disagree; we actually like her Brookings look better. It’s very androgynous, in an ’80s New Wave sort of way, and much hipper than her current styling.

Her look today, as one commenter noted, makes her look a bit like a “Desperate Housewife” — namely, Bree Van De Kamp. Her earlier hairstyle, in contrast, draws greater attention to her fine facial features, highlighting the superb bone structure that made her a model before she went into government. It gives her a more youthful appearance — more Natalie Portman than Marcia Cross.

So if you’re out there reading this, Ms. O’Sullivan, please consider reverting to your Brookings Institution look. Just some friendly fashion advice from your friends at Wonkette.

On a related note, yesterday’s post on O’Sullivan led some of you to complain that we spend too much time admiring female hotties and not enough time on their male counterparts. We think we’ve given you a fair amount of male eye candy (e.g., here and here).

But we’re happy to give you more. If you have original pics — preferably shirtless — of hot guys with some vague connection to politics or government, please feel free to send them our way, and perhaps we’ll post them.

Now that you’ve eaten the candy, it’s time for the vegetables. Here’s the press release:

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 8, 2006

CHERTOFF, SENATORS PRESENTED WITH ‘RUN FOR YOUR LIFE’ SNEAKERS BY GREENPEACE

Organization Calls for Legislation to Eliminate Chemical Security Targets in Communities

WHAT: Greenpeace will present Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, and members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee with sneakers to illustrate the vulnerability of Americans living near chemical facilities. The sneakers will be delivered in red boxes with plexiglass covers reading: “In case of emergency, break glass.”

WHY: Four and a half years after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Americans would be surprised to learn that their best form of protection may be their sneakers. Millions of Americans are at risk because of government inaction to address the vulnerability of chemical facilities. You will have no protection from a chlorine gas cloud emitted by a chemical facility unless you can run a seven-minute mile. According to the chemical industry’s own estimates, a chlorine gas cloud can drift through a city at seven mph - the approximate qualifying speed for the Boston Marathon — and remain dangerous for 14 miles.

As late as 2005, the former Deputy Homeland Security advisor to the President stated that the government had taken no action to reduce terrorist risks to chemical facilities in the U.S. and that it should be a number one priority. Of the more than 3,400 high priority facilities that each put 1,000 people or more at risk in the U.S., only 225 have switched to safe technologies.

On June 14th, Members of Congress will have an opportunity to significantly increase public safety by voting to support Senator Lautenberg’s (D-NJ) legislation (S.2486) requiring that high-risk chemical facilities convert to safe and cost-effective technologies and eliminate the risk of terrorist attack. In March, Secretary Chertoff opposed this legislation at a forum sponsored by the chemical industry.

WHEN: 9:50 - 11:00 a.m.

WHERE: Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 342, U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, National Emergency Management: Getting the Structure Right

A Few More PETA Pics

We like the sneakers.

For those of you in need of a little morning pick-me-up, here are additional photos from yesterday’s “Running of the Nudes,” PETA’s protest against bullfighting.

They’re not quite as exciting as yesterday’s batch, which featured an exposed nipple. And our operative apologizes for the “sub-Ansel-Adams quality” of the images: “From a camera phone, but what can you do?”

But there’s still plenty of exposed flesh for you to ogle. Check ‘em out, after the jump.

In addition to the pictures below, photos 13 and 14 in this image gallery are from yesterday’s event.

The PETA Protests: Now With Pictures

A little bitching can go a long way. After we complained about the dearth of photos from this afternoon’s PETA event, one of you kindly sent a few in our direction. Here’s one (click to enlarge):

We take back what we said earlier about the protestors not being that cute!

After the jump, two more photos — including one with an exposed nipple…
