From the Amazon description of the book Portman is reading: The child learns to feed the reptile raw chicken from the boat using a long pole and, despite his uncertainties and fears, accomplishes the difficult task.
So, basically, it's a training manual. He's prepared for his new duties!
Looks innocent enough but this is an old House trick: tuck your porn inside your children's storybook. Nobody's the wiser.
