Because Taiwan Is Always Getting Screwed By the U.S.
The Taipei Times reports:
President Chen Shui-bian yesterday used the Oscar nominated movie Brokeback Mountain as an analogy to describe relations between the US and Taiwan, stressing the importance of both sides seeking ways to reconcile and cooperate with one another to reach the common pursuit of a “great new world.”
Huh? The President of Taiwan is comparing U.S.-Taiwan relations to a sublimely dysfunctional relationship between two gay ranch hands?
Okay, fine; we'll play along. Taiwan is definitely Jake Gyllenhaal, since it's always getting fucked in the ass by Heath Ledger, a.k.a. the United States. So if America is Heath Ledger, then mainland China must be… Michelle Williams. (God, this is starting to sound like a Maureen Dowd column — if she ever bothered to write about U.S.-Taiwan relations.)
We wish we knew how to quit making strained analogies and lame jokes based on Brokeback Mountain!

Meanwhile, Bush won't even see Brokeback, not even to save his relationship with Taiwan. He's so repressed. Not unlike Ledger...hmmmm...

Taiwan seems to be encouraging the U.S. to forcefully fuck it, lead it on for 20 years about how it feels, and then come to its senses only after they are gone (or in this case, part of China).
Of course, the only difference between this and the present Iraq policy is that they weren't asking for it.
When a country says no it really means yes!

I think that the missing piece here as that filmmaker Ang Lee is Taiwanese. And I'm not sure, but was there something thrown in about Taiwan-China relations being a lot like something you'd see in Cruising?

I wanted to say that I appreciate the fact that you've blogged something about Taiwan. Your so-called "strained analogy/lame joke" actually hits the nail on the head. It may be exactly what Chen had in mind.China would obviously be the "Joe Aguirre" character played by Randy Quaid.

[Sorry for the premature e-post-ulation above, but the "Post Comment" button was obscured by the ad I was trying to make disappear.]
There are several expat bloggers here in Taiwan writing about Taiwan-China-U.S. relations (among other things), but mentioning this on Wonkette will certainly get the attention of more readers, and Taiwan needs that desperately in the face of China's missiles.
Here are a few of the expats who are blogging on the side of democracy if you wouldn't mind sending some readers this way or want to read some of our insights for yourselves.
