The federal government, in its infinite wisdom, told TV stations to stop broadcasting non-digital TV signals as of next year because most of us have cable and don't watch teh old timey TVs with rabbit ears. For those that do, though, the government has allocated $1.5 billion for a coupon programto give people $40 off the purchase of a $50-$70 digital converter. Of course, they're available on a first-come, first-served basis to people who promise that they totally need them, which is a great fucking way to run a government program because the people that can get online and print the coupons are also the ones who still have analog televisions that will require the converters. Also, neither the conversion to digital nor the coupon program will in any way benefit the manufacturers of the coverters or digital televisions or the cable or satellite TV industries at all.
