No Tax-*Rate* Increases On Billionaires, Kyrsten Sinema? Liz Warren Has A Whole New Tax For That!

Watch out, bloated plutocrats: Senate Democrats are coming for you. To help pay for the Build Back Better Act, Democrats rolled out two plans that would go after vast wealth that corporations and billionaires try to hide away from ever being taxed; each of the new plans is expected to bring in hundreds of billions of dollars over 10 years.

The first plan, to impose a 15 percent minimum tax on corporate profits over a billion dollars, was introduced by Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Ron Wyden of Oregon, and Angus King of Maine; it has the support of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who has blocked other tax increases that were originally proposed as part of Build Back Better. So that's going to be helpful in moving it along should no other "centrist" Dem decide "nah."

The second plan, from Warren and Wyden, would go after the very richest Americans' "unrealized gains" on assets every year, instead of only collecting capital gains taxes when those assets are sold; it's one of the ways the very wealthy get richer without paying income taxes. (They never sell. They borrow their fuck-you money against their stocks as collateral.)

Both plans, in addition to helping to fund Build Back Better, have some real class war appeal, since they address the tax loopholes that widen the gap between the filthy rich and ordinary American taxpayers. As Wyden said in a statement on the proposed billionaire tax,

There are two tax codes in America. [...] The first is mandatory for workers who pay taxes out of every pay check. The second is voluntary for billionaires who defer paying taxes for years, if not indefinitely.

John Eastman, Coup-Plotting Lunatic, Almost Time For Your Subpoena!

You write one measly coup memo detailing how an absolute fucking loser can steal an election he didn't win (because America loathes him and didn't vote for him), you get a subpoena from Congress? Unfair!

But that's reportedly about to happen for John Eastman, coup-plotting galaxy brain.

The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol is expected to subpoena John Eastman, the pro-Trump legal scholar who outlined scenarios for denying Joe Biden the presidency, according to the panel's chairman.

"It will happen," Chair Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) said in an interview Tuesday of a subpoena for Eastman, who played a key role in the legal operation that was run out of a "command center" at the Willard Hotel in Washington in the days and hours leading up to Jan. 6. Thompson did not provide a timeline for when the subpoena will be issued.

The Washington Post reports that they are at the "documents and communications" stage with Eastman, and also notes that Eastman could of course avoid the unpleasantness of a subpoena if he just cooperated with the committee. But then he'd have to act like a law-abiding grown-up, which isn't really the MAGA way.

Oh Sh*t, Dallas Teacher Did A Critical Race Theory To The Texas Wingnuts!

Back in September, a rightwing Texas group decided that the state's stupid law banning the teaching of "critical race theory" in schools was a good step, but it fretted that despite the law, the Dallas Independent School District probably had a lot of teachers secretly indoctrinating students. The outfit, calling itself "Save Texas Kids," suspected plenty of teachers were still teaching American history, or even using novels by Black people that might be critical of our perfectly fair and equal nation that is dedicated to equality as long as you aren't too loud about it.

So it did what any patriotic group might: It went full East Germany, and emailed teachers in the Dallas ISD to encourage them to snitch on any colleagues who might be breaking the law by teaching CRT, and any faculty who might be telling them to, even though critical race theory is an area of study in graduate programs and law schools.

Save Our Kids president Natalie Cato (no relation to the Institute or the Roman historian, as far as we know) also asked school employees to report coworkers who promoted "predatory gender fluidity," although as far as we can tell that's not illegal even in Texas, even if the state has banned transgender kids from being on school sports teams that match their gender identity.

Virginia Mom Begs Voters Not To Let Toni Morrison Kill More White Children With Words

Glenn Youngkin, the Republican candidate for Virginia governor, has unleashed his own version of a Willie Horton ad against Democrat Terry McAuliffe. This is his intro to the damning video he shared on Twitter:

What's it like to have Terry McAuliffe block you from having a say in your child's education? This mom knows – she lived through it. Watch her powerful story. #VAgov

The mother is Laura Murphy, and she looks like she's been through hell ... presumably because of McAuliffe's actions as governor. Let's go with that.

MURPHY: As a parent, it's hard to catch everything, so when my son showed me his reading assignment, my heart sunk. It was some of the most explicit material you could imagine.

Then we see her white lady hands clutching what I assume are invisible pearls.

MURPHY: I met with lawmakers. They couldn't believe what I was showing them. Their faces turned bright red with embarrassment. They passed bills requiring schools to notify parents when explicit content was assigned. It was bipartisan. It gave parents a say! The option to choose an alternative. I was so grateful. And then Gov. Terry McAullife vetoed it!

Oh no! As she shares her disappointment, we see an image of her with her very white family dressed in white at the beach.

This ad is unbelievable, literally.

Fox News, GOP Senators Blew Propaganda Up Each Other's Bottoms For Whole Merrick Garland Hearing, It Was Yuck

Four stars.

Whenever there's a hearing in Congress, we joke and Media Matters jokes and everybody else jokes that every Republican elected official participating is just auditioning for 20 seconds of glory on the Hannity show later. That's literally all they're there to do. Nothing they believe in is real, it's all make-believe, but they have to supply yell-mouthing quotes for Fox News to air as fake news, which helps Fox News shape the narrative. And whenver a new narrative is established -- critical race theory! cancel culture! transgender people existing! -- those same Republican electeds dutifully barf out the garbage they've heard on Fox News.

And around and around they go.

With that in mind, watch Fox News idiot Harris Faulkner come back after playing all eight minutes of Tom Cotton throwing his feathers in the air and dancing the official Arkansas square dance of indignation at Attorney General Merrick Garland today -- a true clown show, any sentient being would just make fun of it like Wonkette did -- and call it "RIVETING."

Then she spread more conspiracy theories and lies -- like the GOP senators did in the hearing today -- about how the Biden Department of Justice considers conservative parents to be "domestic terrorists." At the end of this clip, Faulkner and Kayleigh McEnany (another credible source of information!) agree with Tom Cotton that Merrick Garland should resign.

The GOP Will Never Stop Trying To Make Andy McCabe LOCK HER UPS Happen

It's never gonna happen.

The GOP will never stop fucking that Andy McCabe chicken. We're all supposed to move on from an attempted coup that happened this year, but they'll be howling about the Deep State Justice Department sticking wiretaps in Trump's ass until the end of time. To wit, Sen. Chuck Grassley's questioning of Attorney General Merrick Garland in today's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

While Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley were busy shrieking melodramatically about the evils of protecting school board members from domestic terrorists, Grassley was having a temper tantrum about the recent news that the DOJ settled the former acting FBI director's wrongful termination lawsuit and agreed to pay McCabe's back pension and legal bills.

Joe Manchin Said Good Thing About Taxing Billionaires, So The New York Times Decided He Didn't

Let's shake down some billionaires with a 'patriotic tax.'

This headline from today's New York Times seems to have provided yet another reason to feel annoyed with Senator Joe Manchin.

NYT headline: Manchin denounces the Democrats' plan to tax billionaires as divisive. New York Times

Jesus Christ, Manchin thinks taxing literally 700 people is “divisive"? He apparently finds the very idea offensive like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez existing and speaking in public. Gee, why tax anyone at all. No one really enjoys it: Taxation continually ranks as the bottom of America's preferred kinks.

Fortunately, I read past the headline, which is misleading clickbait, like a common Wonkette Tabs hed, and then I read an entirely different account which had an actual transcript. Manchin's still an insufferable asshole whom history will record as helping enable democracy's demise. However, he's not entirely unreasonable on this particular point. Ready, New York Times? Go!
