Anderson Cooper is rich, famous, and handsome -- as well as an American aristocrat (to wit, a Vanderbilt). But even he still has his "Do I look fat?" days, when he's wracked with insecurity.
Over at his blog, in a post purportedly about Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes, our favorite newsman goes fishing for compliments:
"You look like a kid," was the first thing Mike said to me when I saw him Saturday evening.
"That's because he is a kid compared to you," Mary quickly chimed in.
When Mike told me he was going to be 88 years old this year, I did a double take. I couldn't believe it. He looks amazing, and has far more energy than I do.
I've been reporting now for 15 years, and there are days I wonder how long I can keep this pace up. News is a tough business. It's hard on your family. It's hard on your brain. It's hard on your body. But Mike Wallace has been at the top of his game for decades, longer than I have been alive. If I could have half the career Mike Wallace has had, and will continue to have, I would consider myself a very lucky man indeed.
Was that a fishing expedition, or what? Well, Anderson's readers were happy to oblige. Check out the comments to his post. The first comment was snarky: "Yeah, a kid with grey hair!" But after that, the compliments just kept rolling in:
For selfish reasons I hope I'll still be watching you when you're 88. Maybe by then your're hair will turn dark again like Mike's. ;-) But then again I love the gray hair, especially the silver eyelashes...
What a nice tribute, Anderson! You are well on your way to joining that club of hard-working, dedicated, trail-blazing journalists!
That was from "Samuel," of West Hollywood -- who no doubt just wants to get in Anderson's pants. Take a number, Sam!
(As for the "kid with grey hair" commenter, "Andrew" of New Orleans -- heck, he has every right to be in a foul mood. If our houses were underwater, as the result of a natural disaster and government incompetence, we'd be pretty bitter too.)
