Awkward Scrabble With Local Artists

Awkward Scrabble With Local Artists
  • There is only one horrible way to describe Spirit, Judy Stone's video installation: New Age. Her videos somehow manage to combine mediation with discharging firearms, which sounds a lot like Sean Penn's Oscar speech. Yikes. Until Feb. 27, at the Hillyer Art Space. [Arts and Artists]
  • Frank Gohlke's exhibit, Accommodating Nature, shows photographs of Man trying to control Nature with his humble lawnmower, as well as ominous pictures of power plants and industrial parks looking so very out of place in the middle of picturesque wheat fields. Until March 3. [Smithsonian American Art Museum]
  • DCist is hosting the DCist Exposed Photography Show, an inside look into the heart and soul of Our Nation's Capital. Professional photography, as well as the work from the DCist's photo contest, will be showcased and includes photos of a Dupont Circle pillow fight, even more pictures of Obama and homeless people. Until Mar. 7. [Flashpoint]
  • Wednesday, Feb. 25: It's against the Koran to make images of people, places and things (in order to discourage idolatry), so what can the Muslims actually draw? Beautifully intricate calligraphy and shapes and squigglies? Yes they can! The Freer Gallery has a free tour at 6:45 PM tonight to provide insight into the arts of the Islamic world. [Freer Gallery]
  • Wednesday, Feb. 25: Play Scrabble with local artists Steve Frost and Geoffrey Aldridge. If it sounds kind of awkward, here's another incentive: there might be free beer and pretzels. 3-8PM. [Transformer]
