bernstein.jpgEarlier this week, Carl Bernstein told the Kansas Press Association he can't stand how TV's "idiot culture" has ruined serious journalism. APRIL 2005: "The gravest threat today to the best obtainable version of the truth comes from these lowered standards. And the consequences to a society that is misinformed and disinformed by the grotesque values of this idiot culture are truly perilous....For the first time in our history, the weird, the stupid, the coarse, the sensational and the untrue are becoming our cultural norm -- even our cultural ideal."

FEBRUARY 1999: "The sleazy standards of the low end of the media is affecting the standards of even the high end of our busines...That is the triumph of idiot culture."

APRIL 1997: "We are at the worst of times in the best obtainable version of the truth. The media generated in America and western Europe has been dominated and bastardized by the triumph of an idiot culture."

JUNE 1994: "Over the last 20 years the press has abdicated its function of arriving at the truth..."

MAY 1992: "The weird and the stupid and the coarse are becoming our cultural norm, even our cultural ideal. The consequence is the spectacle, and the triumph, of the idiot culture."
