Faggot: The Play (Launch Party)
We couldn't make it to the fundraiser and campaign launch party for Faggot: The Play because, honestly, it sounded a little gay to us, though we did manage to send the lovely Liz Gorman and the distinctly less lovely Intern Greg to check it out. Check out Liz's photo gallery here and read Greg's report right after the jump.
Faggot is about two quirky but lovable dads doing their best to raise their children in a crazy world, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Ha ha, no just kidding. Sheldon Scott, the show's writer, director and sole actor explained it to us as being an exploration of sexuality through comedy and therapy, also telling us his previous gig was as a psychotherapist, a vocation that screams comedy. It's going to open on July 21 as part of the Capital Fringe Fest.
The venue ("The Box" as it was listed on the flier) was actually Sheldon's house and the party was pretty much going down in the back yard. It wasn't exactly in full swing when we got there but there was an impressively stocked bar kept by a incredibly generous bartender, providing us with the both the reason and the means to get sloppy drunk before it was even dark out. Before long, the place was full of lots of people we recognized from times we've out drinking beer in bars and it was sort of like downstairs at Saint Ex had been moved to this backyard in Shaw.
Turns out Sheldon knows just about everybody in town and everybody in town pretty much likes Sheldon enough to give him shit for free so he can make enough money to put on his play. The list of DJs included Yellow Fever and Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton (who we heard were on their way just before we blacked out). Local 16 provided the catering free of charge, though due to what Sheldon described as a "technical problem," it hadn't made it to the party yet. But hey, as far as we're concerned this thing was a success. As one shrewd observer pointed out, "for a party in his backyard, this is pretty fucking sweet." We can't wait to see the show, that Nathan Lane can really belt it out.
