For another big movie rec, here is a series of documentaries from the 1970s called The Battle Of Chile, by Patricio Guzmán. You may be familiar, as they started coming out in 1975 (there’s three of them), and they chronicle what really happened as the socialist government of Salvador Allende and the will of the people were toppled by a US-backed fascist/terrorist coup. Of course, then came the military dictatorship of Pinochet. It’s a good documentary for right now, to examine the lengths the far right does, always has, and will go to, in order to protect fascist power. How there is nothing new under the sun for what American fascists support, at home and abroad. How perpetually interesting it is that Donald Trump’s chief “diplomat” is a Latino guy who is very much cut from the same cloth as the US-backed Latin American fascists who have been savaging and raping and pillaging that part of the world for decades, paid and trained by the US. How MAGA fascists are just the same, and sound just the same, no matter what country they’re in, across generations and oceans and languages. It’s like Mad Libs. How today’s crop of fascists in the US is likely to employ similar tactics to what they did in Chile if/when a real leader like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Jon Ossoff or Abdul El-Sayed were to come to power in the United States, the same things they did to Allende. How they’re most desperate when they’re losing.

Apollo software programming leader woman Margaret Hamilton has died. This is the best anecdote though!

There was the incident that became known as “the Lauren error”: One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with the command module simulator at the Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight — which crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch P01 during flight.

She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that’s exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were integrated into the program.

Neither I nor anyone on NegusWhoRead’s staff has ever been to Vermont, but I was (and I am very hesitant to announce this because it may lead to a revocation of my Black card) a huge fan of the sitcom Newhart, which detailed the life of a man who owned a bed and breakfast in Vermont.

Based on my extensive viewing of this show, I can say without equivocation that there are no Black people in Vermont. I watched the show faithfully, so my statement is valid. Based on almost every study ever done, whites use cocaine at higher rates than Blacks, so Howard Dean, a doctor in a state where Bob Newhart’s fictional show is based that proves there are no Black people, is uniquely qualified to talk about the intersection of white people, politics and cocaine. That’s just science.
