Kids Don't Eat Free In the District, Even If It Saves Lives
Thursday, June 11: DC has a few issues -- high dropout and teen pregnancy rates, an AIDS epidemic, never-ending nonsensical violent crime -- but there's nothing that a cooking competition can't fix! Get some kids in a room, have them cook a meal made of "surprise' ingredients," make some top DC chefs judge the thing, and next thing we know Adams Morgan will be as safe and shiny as Manhattan!Brainfood, a non profit that uses cooking to teach youth some life skills (read: how to not drop out of school, get AIDS or pregnant, and/or commit a violent crime), is hosting a Grill-Off Competition on Thursday from 6:30PM-8:30PM at theDecatur House. Tickets are $75, and include food, wine tasting, cooking demos, an everyone's favorite, an open bar. [ Brainfood ]
Thursday, June 11: The Going Out Gurus over at theWashington Post are hosting their monthly happy hour again, and this time it's out in Arlington at Freddie's Beach Bar and Restaurant. The free food that will probably run out before you get there? Meatballs, spinach artichoke dip, and buffalo wings. The drawing for awesome prizes that you probably won't win? Beyonce tickets or a trip to Rehoboth beach. But those Gurus know how to throw a good Happy Hour, so it's definitely worth venturing out to Crystal City. [ Going Out Guide Happy Hour ]
Tonight through Saturday, June 13: Normally we would suggest you avoid food that's created by a chef trained in molecular gastronomy for fear of what it may do to your insides, but if the chef has also won the Chilean Chef of the Year Award, it's probably safe to consume his dishes. The restaurant Ceiba has brought in Chef Matias Palomo from Chile and he has created a five-course fixed dinner menu for $39, or $59 when paired with Chilean wine. [Ceiba ]
Saturday, June 13 - Sunday, June 21: Did you know that there are kids in DC? We thought that the city was just full of starving interns, sketchy lobbyists, and prostitutes hanging out in the Mayflower Hotel. Turns out that there are plenty of kids here, so many that numerous area restaurants have decided to participate in Kids Restaurant Week. But this is no kids eat free at Denny's people. Take your children toparticipating restaurants and watch them as they throw delicately made mac and cheese and succulent peas all over themselves, while you stare at your plate and wonder why the hell you spent $29 on your price-fixed meal. Ah, family. [ Kid's Restaurant Week ]
Best in DC: On Monday the winners of the Rammy (Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington) Awards were announced, and because they're supposedly given to the best restaurants in the DC area, we thought that you might enjoy dining at one of them. The favorite monosyllabic restaurant award went toCork; the winner of the complete contradiction award (what the hell does "upscale casual" mean and what does it have to do with food?) went to Rasika; the favorite overly priced chocolate shop posing as a bar award went to CoCo Sala, and the winner of the favorite neighborhood gathering place somehow managed to be The Liberty Tavern, a restaurant out in ... Arlington. [ RAMW ]
