The Valley ain't the wild, it's a city of 20-40,000. In my first trip to Yo-semite, bears somehow unzipped my tent door, then went out the back door, which didn't exist. Also tore down + up 3 other tents, luckily unoccupied. Later they exiled all those big Cal brown (neo-grizzly- had this conversation before) bears to the highland of the huge Park, and I think any that "interact" with people. Bears that are that acclimatized to people aren't usually very threatening, unless you try to take away their food or do anything else they don't like. But they can kinda kill you with a casual throat swipe. Or it's that time of the month- in Yellowstone (lived in Jackson Hole) a Ranger gave a Bear lecture how these 2 Swiss girls were eaten: "They only found an arm and a leg", which freaked me out. I mean I can understand killing people, they are pretty annoying, but EATING them?????

In the Smokeys had one (Black) roar + stand at me in the dark by the fenceless shelter on Clingmans Dome and I flew backwards at 30 mph into the wire w tin cans, slashing my palm open. I was investigating this bear that had stood up at 3am and was munching the food I'd stuck in the rafters 8ft up; but it crashed into the woods when we all screamed.... but this was a SECOND BEAR!! Got a nice "bear scar".
