The AP on America’s Smartest Legislator, the Stumper: “Republican Rep. Joe Barton of Texas said Friday that efforts to tinker with the BCS are bound to fail. He told a House hearing that the BCS is like communism and can’t be fixed. Barton has introduced legislation that would prevent the NCAA from labeling a game a national championship unless it’s the outcome of a playoff system.” He agrees with Obama on this, so doesn’t that make him a communist also? The Texasness, it hurts.

It’s nice to see Michelle Bachmann is influencing government so much.
– makes it more fun.

GDuvall May 1, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Maybe we should send Secretary Chu back to the Hill to explain to Barton that the NCAA doesn’t actually label the BCS Championship a national championship, and basically ignores the BCS.

Bearbloke May 1, 2009 at 1:52 pm

They let him use the big boy crayons for something this important!

TeddyS May 1, 2009 at 1:54 pm

There is no more important issue facing Congress and America than the college football schedule, and Barton even screws that up.

Lascauxcaveman May 1, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Heh? Barry likes the idea of college playoff for football? Yet another thing I have in common with him. (And the only thing I have in common with supergenius Barton.)

But yeah, Mr. Barton, having the government force the NCAA into a playoff system? You don’t see how that is communism? No, I see that you don’t.

More importantly, the White House is now on Facebook!

A.Q. Conference? Isn’t he under house arrest in Pakistan?

Up next: Steroid use in professional sports.

Joey Ratz May 1, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Was he the guy who tried to pass a motion a few months back about how the “House recognises that the Texas Longhorns should have been in the national championship game and probably would have won it too”? Or was that some other Tejas pol? They all look and sound the same to me.

Better Dead then Selected for a BCS game by a Amalgam of Polls and Computers!

HoboNutz May 1, 2009 at 2:02 pm

And a 5 game playoff series is like mercantilism

[re=306223]Lionel Hutz Esq.[/re]: BCS should be a death-march, that’s all I’m saying…

Dave J. May 1, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Kind of hilarious that a Texas Rep. has to fight like this for the team from AUSTIN, bastion of liberalism. You know deep in his heart he wishes he could root for the Sooners.

Lionel Hutz Esq. May 1, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Remember the old days when Republicans use to only label Democrats they disagreed with as Commies?

If you start to label everything you disagree with as Communist, it is like it has no meaning anymore.

What has become of the Republican Party? Why does Congressman Barton hate America so?

Min May 1, 2009 at 2:07 pm

Sucks to be an idiot.

V572625694 May 1, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Doesn’t our fucking Congress have anything more important to devote itself to than listening to self-congratulatory, bore-ass, prepared statements read by guys with flagrant comb-overs? About college sports, of all the god-damned things to waste their time on?

FlamingSooner May 1, 2009 at 2:19 pm

It says on the wikipedia that Barton is an A&M Aggie.

THEY haven’t come near a National Championship since the 1930′s….someone needs to tell Barton that his school actually has to WIN GAMES to even participate.

I hate the Aggies almost as much as the Shorthorns.

I’d say that Barton is a clueless dumbass, but the A&M diploma says that for him…

Bobby Rush is all like “What you talkin’ bout Willis?”

SmutBoffin May 1, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Rooshians don’t even know what sports ARE.

Remember the scene in that documentary, Red Dawn, when the Soviet commander is all like “WTF is a Wolverine, anyway?” and the Nicaraguan commando says “It’s the name of the local sports collective”.

uncletravelingmatt May 1, 2009 at 2:28 pm

If Boise State/Oklahoma taught Americans anything, it was that shocking upsets happen. There is, therefore, only one reasonable, measured response to this grave threat to our nation — FOX-sponsored Shocker Parties.

Patton May 1, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Ah, the sweet, sweet smell of someone with too much time on his hands and not enough brains to fill a shot glass.

Patton May 1, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Although I will admit the BCS is a bit frakked up. I doubt it’s going to change anytime soon, though.

19kevin8 May 1, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Obama doesn’t like the BCS + Barton doesn’t like the BCS + I don’t like the BCS – I heart Obama (disdain Barton) = let’s see, um, carry the one, er, shift the decimal…

Okay, I now love a flawed college football playoff system!

mookworthjwilson May 1, 2009 at 2:56 pm

My vote goes to the team whose QB has the longest taint is crowned champion.

lawrenceofthedesert May 1, 2009 at 3:20 pm

It’s a very good safe place for Baby the King Barton to fool around — much better than him analyzing Park Service budgets or looking for nuclear waste dumps. Give him a snack, change his diapers and let him play.

snideinplainsight May 1, 2009 at 3:35 pm

You fool! The BCS is just like Bo the Water-Poodle! Obama is using his passive hypnotic techniques on you so that you will not recognize his Change!

DangerousLiberal May 1, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Wow. I used to teach my students that american politics and government is supposed to keep bullshit off the agenda and allow the most important and pressing matters to gain the most attention. Boy was I wrong. Sorry, kids! Off to update that chapter of my book.

Still, I do teach that there are enough committees that even madcap horseshit like this can get a hearing somewhere and then be buried behind a whole shitload of bills that name federal buildings and post offices after local heroes. So there’s, also, that.

Low overhang May 1, 2009 at 7:58 pm

I cannot make fun of this tard, he doesn’t have the IQ of a fuckin pickle an it seem hurtful to point and laugh

momus May 2, 2009 at 12:23 pm

He’s not mad about UT not playing for the BCS championship, he’s mad that his alma mater A&M didn’t get a chance. But then he want to a trade school in Indiana (Purdue) for his masters so he’s not that bright.

pat robertsons personal trainer May 2, 2009 at 4:52 pm

One of the only things fat, white conservative Texans don’t normally sound stupid talking about (among football: the lawn, fishing) and he fucks it up. Royally. Darrell K. Royal-ly to be exact.
Also.
Rick Perry: former Texas A & M Aggie male cheerleader (no girl cheerleaders @ A & M, just bottoms).

P.S. The BCS sucks. A playoff doesn’t devalue the regular season. It devalues 90% of bowl games. And there are a lot of insurance and used car salesmen in second tier cities that DO NOT want that to happen.
