  • ROBERT BYRD HAD A FALL! Uh oh, Robert Byrd is about to die or something. No, maybe not. He just “stood up too fast this morning in his home and fell down.” For a 91-year-old, that’s like having a H-Bomb land on your forehead. He has been taken to the hospital, so WEST VIRGINIA STATE LEGISLATURE, GET TO WORK ON EMERGENCY LEGISLATION TO APPOINT AN INTERIM– we wish him all the best and have nothing to say about politics right now. He’ll do anything to join Teddy again.

Junior September 22, 2009 at 12:51 pm

I’ve fallen and I can’t get…

Nevermind.

SayItWithWookies September 22, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Get well, Senator. And no more climbing the ladder and cleaning the gutters, either.

schvitzatura September 22, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Joe Manchin…the next Blago?

queeraselvis v 2.0 September 22, 2009 at 12:54 pm

If Byrd were in the UK, he’d be dead by now.

TGY September 22, 2009 at 12:56 pm

EPIC FALL

I mean, um, get well soon! Sorry.

samsuncle September 22, 2009 at 12:58 pm

I hope Obama’s death panels done get wind of this.

mephistopheles jefferson September 22, 2009 at 12:59 pm

You know how you can’t drive a car if you’re fifteen, because we as a society don’t trust fifteen year-olds in general to be competent enough to drive, even though I’m sure many fifteen year-olds could drive just fine? THIS MAN IS 91 FUCKING YEARS OLD AND IS 3RD IN LINE FOR THE PRESIDENCY. Time for some ageist anti-olds legislation, stat.

RoscoePColtraine September 22, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Stood up too fast and fell down? He needs to do more cardio.

hobospacejunkie September 22, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Keep fuckin’ that…or rather keep kluxing that klan, Senator. Get your vote back in DC soon or hand it off to your successor. Kinda’ selfish to run for reelection at such an advanced age.

Mahousu September 22, 2009 at 1:00 pm

You can tell he tried to stand up too fast this morning because it was still morning when he finished. Usually, he starts standing around 6 AM and aims to be on his feet by around 1 in the afternoon.

Of course, the same is true of me some days, but that’s another story.

BigDupa September 22, 2009 at 1:07 pm

[re=416628]mephistopheles jefferson[/re]: Nancy Pelosi is third in line, Greta.

Humpback September 22, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Byrd could probably tell you stories about other famous Congressmen who fell down in eras past.

V572625694 September 22, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Who’d replace him? Somebody with half the smarts, a quarter the knowledge, and a tiny iota of the seniority. WV is one crazeee place — as we’ll see soon enough.

Extemporanus September 22, 2009 at 1:12 pm

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

Are we sure the reason Byrd (née Cornelius Calvin Sale, Jr.) fell was because he stood up too fast?

Perhaps someone accidently let slip to the Exalted Cyclops that a wild race mongrel had been elected president of his beloved land.

jagorev September 22, 2009 at 1:13 pm

[re=416639]BigDupa[/re]: Actually, mephistopheles had it right. VP Biden is first in line to the Presidency, then Nancy Pelosi second, and Robert Byrd is third.

OT, but there’s a gallery of Michelle O at TPM. God she’s adorable:

After Byrd recovers he will regale us with the story of how in ancient times Senator Testiclesius of Rome at the advanced age of 36 fell from the fornication swing at the regular second Sunday of the month Senatorial orgy and recovered just in time to cast the deciding vote that declared war on the Visigoths.

x111e7thst September 22, 2009 at 1:20 pm

If Byrd fell and no one liveblogged it, did it actually happen?

BigDupa September 22, 2009 at 1:21 pm

[re=416648]jagorev[/re]: My apologies. I remember when the Presidency went Hillary, Bill, Al, Newt, Bob…

Norbert September 22, 2009 at 1:21 pm

[re=416646]V572625694[/re]: According to human muppet John Denver, West Virginia is almost heaven.

hobospacejunkie September 22, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Robert Byrd sat on a wall
Robert Byrd had a great fall
All the king’s horses & all the king’s men
Couldn’t bother to put him together again

Good thing nursery rhymes don’t have to make sense. Of course the horses, with their hooves or whatever, couldn’t help. Horses can’t do surgery. Wild race mongrels: band name anyone?

Crazybroad September 22, 2009 at 1:25 pm

One of the MacArthur geniuses this year studies old people falling. He’s just doing his part to advance science.

Yaybuls September 22, 2009 at 1:26 pm

[re=416653]Gorillionaire[/re]:

And then he’ll relate it to how this was almost as difficult as it was writing his first book, “The Epic of Gilgamesh”.

Suds McKenzie September 22, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Wake me when he had “a stand”.

Min September 22, 2009 at 1:29 pm

At 91, no one stands up “too fast”.

Manos: Hands of Fate September 22, 2009 at 1:31 pm

In WV the gov gets to fill the seat right away and yes he’s a Democrat so fear not young libs the next time Byrd doesn’t get up.

Of course WV is crooked as a bag of snakes so look for some kind of Blago-like incident during the whole replacement process.

Crazybroad September 22, 2009 at 1:34 pm

[re=416650]V572625694[/re]: The “First Lady Czar.” I like that.

kdaddy September 22, 2009 at 1:37 pm

I fell off a ladder once and went from being 38 to 91 for several weeks so I sympathize. Best
wishes for a speedy institutionalizing.

Jumping Jim September 22, 2009 at 1:39 pm

After the fall, Senator Byrd immediately arranged legislation to create a “Center for the Study of Seniors Falling” to be based in Greenbrier, West Virginia. The center will employ 500 people and will cost taxpayers $100,000,000 to build and $55,000,000 per year to maintain.

Scrodd September 22, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Soon: The Robert Byrd Hip Replacement Center is dedicated in Wheeling. Followed by the Robert and Erma Byrd Center for Octagenarian and Nonagenarian Studies, as well as the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Studying Centers Names After People.

mephistopheles jefferson September 22, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Scarab September 22, 2009 at 1:53 pm

At 92, if Byrd accidentally has chunky-style peanut butter he has to go to the hospital.
BTW, in that photo he looks EXACTLY like that Muppet, Waldorf.

user-of-owls September 22, 2009 at 1:59 pm

I TOLD the Democrats that a resolution making September 22 “National Humpty Dumpty Day” was a bad idea.

Leopolt September 22, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I hear Strom has some choice black seraphim ass lined up for him.

nbawriter September 22, 2009 at 2:30 pm

You people are barbaric!

BARBARIC!

BARBARIC!

BAAAAAAARBARIC!

bitchincamaro September 22, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Let me be the wind beneath your wrinkled wings, Oh, earthbound aged one.

DustBowlBlues September 22, 2009 at 3:14 pm

[re=416671]Manos: Hands of Fate[/re]: Thanks for answering my question. All that really matters is that the Gov. is D. Oh, and that Sen Byrd had a speedy recovery. Speedy enough to vote for the public fucking option.

I like seeing 91 year old Byrd in the senate. It makes me feel less aged.

Way Cool Larry September 22, 2009 at 5:00 pm

maybe he got tangled in his KKK robes– but if he votes for the public option, all will be forgiven

chascates September 22, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Strom Thurmond had a habit of falling in his later years. Once an aide ran into Fritz Hollings office to tell him ole Strom took a spill on the Senate floor. Hollings didn’t even look up from what he was doing but replied, “He’ll get up. He always does.”

Since Byrd will stay in office as long as he’s living we’ll have a few years of this to look forward to.

LowerdPeninsula September 23, 2009 at 3:45 am

[re=416788]DustBowlBlues[/re]: You guys are killing me with this thing about WV having a Democratic governor so everything’s fine. Any one know how long each of WV’s senators have been in office? Yeah, a long time. You know what’s happened since then? Yeah, the state’s Democrats jumped right on the Evagelical wagon with that state’s Republicans.

So, it doesn’t really matter that the next senator to come out of there will be a Democrat. He or she may as well be a birther with what we’re going to get out of “modern” West Virginia politics. BTW, anyone ever watched Manchin in action? Dumb as a dumptruck of rocks.
