Ha ha, it’s Kathy Griffin, from… wherever she’s from! She is the one who curses a lot on CNN’s Anderson Cooper New Year’s Party, yes? In one of those “unplanned” moments of live television. Well she is now in Washington D.C., videotaping something that will not advance gay rights.

Kathy Griffin was filming herself outside the White House leading an anti-DADT “rally” for her Bravo television show, I’m Famous Enough, Right? It was co-sponsored by the gays’ #1 fame-whore of a lobbying arm, the Human Rights Campaign, described perfectly by Alex Pareene as “an organization that exists to collect money from rich gays and use that money to politely not ask or expect very much from Democrats.”

Then actual gay rights activist Dan Choi — the Arabic translator who was kicked out of the Army for loving dudes — showed up to chain himself to the White House fence! FOREVER! This legitimate form of protesting did not sit well with the HRC and television producers’ fake-protest production:

According to Tweets from Robin McGehee at GetEqual (see stream below) reporting from the Kathy Griffin – Human Rights Campaign “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” rally, McGehee, who is traveling with Lt. Dan Choi, asked Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese if Choi could speak at the rally and he rebuffed her, telling her it was Kathy Griffin’s rally.

Ha ha, assholes. Choi took the stage anyway, murdered Kathy Griffin, and eventually got arrested. Not for murdering Kathy Griffin, though.

Go Dan Choi. Fuck that stage managed shit. It’s not like Kathy Griffin gets enough air time or anything.

God damn it.

I love Dan Choi. Kathy Griffin makes Peter Griffin look subtle. And feminine.

Forever is a long time to spend chained to a fence. I hope he has a lot of space diapers.

Troubledog March 18, 2010 at 2:33 pm

In a clear statement of priorities, Kathy Griffin has now chained herself to a Bravo cameraman.

Aloysius March 18, 2010 at 2:33 pm

While I’m firmly convinced that many of the heads of these organizations are fame whores living off the suffering of real activists like Choi, Kathy Griffin is simply further evidence that Andy Warhol could not tell time.

Saxby Chambliss has no tolerance for men who love men. Men who love little girls is a different story.

Choi should have consulted Vassar Bushmills on civil disobedience. Shoulda smacked that bitch with a newspaper and then farted on Chambliss. Much more effective.

Joshua Norton March 18, 2010 at 2:42 pm

If it ain’t dishing about Brittney or Whitney, Kathy doesn’t seem to work a crowd very well. I saw her on an episode of “Law & Order: SVU” and was so traumatized that I was afraid to turn on my TV for the rest of the week.

Kathy Griffin, and for that matter, Lady GaGa, have hit on something, and I have to give credit to Howard Stern of all people for remarking on this phenomenon; its a winning strategy for a “celebrity” to target teh gays and try to win them as an audience. For the one thing, sorry, as smart and sophisticated as teh gays are, compared to the general slob-population, teh gays have some hot button issues, and its easy to appeal to people who are oppressed, and have hot button issues, by becoming a supporter of their cause. But more importantly, once teh gay community has embraced a celebrity, well, they are very loyal, and said celebrity will have an audience for life. Witness the continuing and still puzzling career of ugly, untalented Madonna Ciccone, and the sudden ubiquity of ugly, “talenty” Lady GaGa. Oh, and Kathy Griffin, Public Lunatic.

Nitpicking something because I see this all the time in regards to Dan Choi, he’s not an “Arabic translator” he’s an infantry officer who just also happens to be fluent in Arabic. Making him like a million times more valuable than a regular infantry officer or regular Arabic translator. The Army and DoD are also fond of firing “Arabic translators” by the dozen for being gay, but those are foreign language students whose main job is to smoke unfiltered cigarettes while reading poetry and lusting after other men. Dan Choi kills people.

And I totally agree that “HRC is for rich, white and polite ones” – and I am a lesbo, rich(ish), white(can’t dance or jump at all), and polite(when appropriate) . I went to one HRC dinner and John Edwards was the keynote speaker. This was 2003 when he was running for pres. and liked gay people and the poors. He made a ton of dough that night and two weeks later said on Meat the Press that he would support a constitutional amendment in his home state that banned gay marriage, and that he was ‘uncomfortable with the idea of gay marriage’. HRC totally sucked up to him and he turned on them. Douchebags one and all.

I don’t think HRC has been doing enough, but I also think it is easy to pile on. As for Dan Choi, he has struck me as a publicity hound. I mean, who shows up at someone else’s rally, asks to speak, complains because they are rebuffed and then upstages everyone? And I say this as someone who was kicked out of the military just prior to DADT.

Does that mean anything? Just a fluke? ummm, he looks good on camera and is well spoken too.

could it be a sign of
a. trying to soften the image of the crappy dadt policy.
b. wanting to keep him off camera by calling him back to duty
c. or they just like him, hate him, cant live without him.

these things are complicated.

So, here is teh gays story:

HRC Solomon.etc refused to let Choi speak. (boo HRC)
Then Kathy invited Choi on stage anyway. (yeah Kathy)

Then Kathy said she would march with Choi to the White House but did not go. (boo Kathy)
Then HRCSolmon.etc did the same thing…what happened to “hey, yea, I’ll march with you bro’, I got your back, I will witness”
(boo HRC)
So HRC and Kathy missed a huge opportunity, Karma is a bitch as always.

the end

superconducting supercollider March 18, 2010 at 6:08 pm

I went through this already on Gawker but HRC pressure on the White House is a very big reason why not even the Pentagon expects DADT to last much longer than the end of the year. The Democrats who don’t do anything for gay people have also passed the Matthew Shepard Act and the President who doesn’t care about gay people issued a white paper in support of equal benefits for gay and straight couples.

But they’re boring rich people and don’t adequately represent real gays or something (I guess every gay man or woman I’ve ever met has been boring because their opinions have always seemed pretty well represented by the HRC) and one time they stripped gender identity out of ENDA to get it to pass the House (which it did, only to die in the Senate, of course) and basically they make compromises and work slowly and steadily and none of that is fun or cool or fabulous or whatever. If you can point out progress as concrete as the examples I pointed out above done by a less “boring” organization, feel free, because that would genuinely interest me.

freeradical March 18, 2010 at 6:52 pm

[re=533298]assistant/atlas[/re]: I am not male or rich, and I work on Capitol Hill (that’s the not rich part), so I get lobbyists up in my grill everyday. And, trust me, HRC is good at the lobbying. Like someone else said on this thread, its easy to pile on, but I know lots of gheys, just like you, who do think they do a good job.

No big deal, but we need to stop the circular firing squad if we want faster progress.

BeWoot March 18, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Who the hell let Kathy Griffin speak? That woman could motivate me to vote against ice cream, against naps, even! If she’s in favor of gays in the military, suddenly I’m questioning sound, rational policy and equal opportunity.

Lanagan March 18, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Dropped my Federal Club (HRC) membership last year because I’m convinced that no civil rights battle can be won by polite rhetoric. In fact, I think HRC keeps us shackled! We have numbers and we have power, yet HRC refuses to issue any call to action, such as rallying, marching, or boycotting. HRC is sucking the lifeblood (money) out of our community and serving themselves quite well. Is there an emerging organization that is more results oriented? Pat Lanagan, Portland, Oregon

Kathy Griffin is making a good living as a comedienne who does not tell any jokes, which I find fascinating. I heard her the other night admit that she is no good at remembering one-liners or telling them. A very large part of her humor is directed at herself, which is healthy, and another large section at so-called celebrities who crave any type of attention and are thus the fairest of game. Kathy doesn’t sing, dance, do impressions, look like a Victoria’s Secret model or tell jokes, yet she has her own specials on Bravo and is famous. She isn’t Dorothy Parker, for sure, but I have to admire the way she successfully fought through the showbiz minefield with so few weapons.

NopantsMcGee March 19, 2010 at 9:35 am

I agree. She’s one damn smart celebrity and she’s not going away. Especially since gays and lesbians have practically adopted her as one of their own. She’s stood with us for decades, way before it was cool to. You mess with Griffin you mess with a hellava lot of gay people.

NopantsMcGee March 19, 2010 at 9:36 am

She’s also one of the only anti-war celebrities to actually go to Iraq and perform for the troops.
