James Comey Will Be New FBI Director As Soon As Glenn Greenwald And John McCain Say So
So we all know that it is only in the fevered fapping imaginings of tea party types that Obummer is a hardcore partisan communist muslin, right? 'Cause in real life Bamz is pretty much the very model of a modern major centrist. Witness the fact that our glorious nation's current FBI director Robert Mueller has been king of the feebs since before 9/11 and Bamz actually went to the Senate to get them to extend Mueller's term past the 10-year term limit. Now Bamz has someone new in mind to lead the Mulders and Scullys of the world, and it is also, too, a dude that served in the George W. administration:
President Obama plans to nominate James B. Comey, a former senior Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration, to replace Robert S. Mueller III as FBI director, according to two people with knowledge of the selection process.
You would think, being good communists, that we would be sad about this nomination, BUT YOU WOULD BE WRONG because James B. Comey is one integrity-filled motherfucker, no lie:
Comey was famously involved in a 2004 hospital-room confrontation with White House counsel Alberto Gonzales and the president’s chief of staff, Andrew H. Card Jr. The two White House officials were attempting to persuade Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, who was recovering from emergency surgery to remove his gallbladder, to reauthorize a controversial warrantless domestic eavesdropping program.
Comey, who was acting attorney general in Ashcroft’s absence, had refused to agree to extend the program. When he learned that the White House was attempting to go around him and get the ill Ashcroft to sign off on an extension, Comey rushed to George Washington University Medical Center, arriving just before Gonzales and Card.
Comey explained to Ashcroft what was happening and, when the White House officials arrived, the attorney general raised himself up and said he never should have authorized the program. He gestured at Comey and said, “There is the attorney general,” according to an account by former Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman.
Seriously, we fucking love this guy. We love him so much that we went and watched his 2007 Congressional testimony about the whole hospital visit shebang, and you should as well because it is AWESOME.
We were about to say that Comey should sail through his confirmation hearings what with having first been appointed by a Republican and all, but then we remembered the Hagel confirmation hearings and remembered that Lindsay Graham and John McCain will make this whole process petty and stupid instead.
Speaking of petty and stupid, you will likely not be surprised to learn that Glenn Greenwald is not very happy with this choice no he is not. We did not really bother to read his column about it because GG;DR (Glenn Greenwald; Didn't Read) but we think the gist of it is that no one on earth is good enough for Glenn except Glenn, but maybe you'd like to trot on over there and read for yourself? No? We don't blame you.
To recap: another Republican nominated by Bamz, which means that liebruls will reflexively hate him because Republican. On the other hand: another Republican nominated by Bamz, which means that conservatives will reflexively hate him because Bamz. However, given that Comey had the stones to stand up to pretty much every fucking person in the Bush White House and say that hey maybe warrantless eavesdropping wasn't the coolest, we figure he can probably withstand the coming onslaught of dumb.
