In 1972, one of my college friends in Boston took a long weekend to do...something. Later that semester she said she had just realized how much I look like my mother. I didn't know she'd ever seen my mother. Turned out, her long weekend was for an abortion and the group she'd contacted to help her get to upstate NY for the procedure included a ride to and from a Howard Johnsons on the NY side of the border. The driver was my mother. She kept it secret from my sister and me for years but shortly before she died she told my sister about it She died not knowing one of her passengers had slipped up. I am so proud to be her daughter and on her behalf am shouting out a big F*CK YOU to all those poor, old ladies who are so sad that nothing will change in New York.
