Open Thread: Conservative Women Won't Celebrate #WomensEqualityDay Til Feminists Tell Them They're Pretty

Happy Women's Equality Day! Sort of! Today celebrates the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which we all know as the amendment that gave women the right to vote. Technically. If you were a white woman. If you were a black woman living in the South, you likely had to wait a few more decades before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 before you actually got to cast one. America!

Anyway, as you might imagine, this holiday is a thing that the Conservative women of Twitter have something very stupid to say about. Namely that they most certainly will not be celebrating the ratification of the 19th Amendment until those mean liberals show some respect to Conservative women. Or something! Also they don't even NEED the right to vote, because they are strong and independent. Or something.

Many other tweets, by the way, included a healthy dose of fat shaming along with their demands that feminists celebrate ALL women, including those who think it would be a swell idea for them to have fewer rights, and those who voted for a man who openly bragged about assaulting women.

This is, of course, a deliberate misreading of feminism. Much like the "if you're so tolerant, why won't you tolerate my intolerance!" crap. Actual feminism is, of course, very different from the Spice Girls GIRL POWER crap, and no, we have no obligation to think every woman is super swell and great while she's out there trying to make life harder for the rest of us. Ahem, Ivanka.

Despite the fact that conservatives routinely scream about how mad they are about "Identity Politics" -- they love, love, love a token. They love the idea of going "We found a woman who thinks Donald Trump is not sexist, which is all the proof you need to know that he is not sexist. And you HAVE to believe her and celebrate her opinion because she is a woman." Which, contrary to what Republicans think, is not actually how we operate.

True equality means that we can judge a woman's shitty opinions just as harshly as we would a man's shitty opinions. Giving someone who says awful things a pass just because they are a woman isn't feminism, it's chivalry. Which, you should know, is not exactly a popular idea among feminists.
