Could we please not bag on the postal service? The vast majority of carriers bust their asses daily to get everyone their stuff. They do so in a hostile and abusive work environment, and deal with the entitled Karen's of the public on a level even fast food workers would flinch at. This time of year the abuse ramps up because of the ballots and campaign ads. Right when everyone starts early shopping for Christmas. If you want to gripe about DeJoy fine, but leave the well over half a million strong union workforce out of it.
Biden has two appointments waiting on the Senate's "advise and consent" to join the USPS Board of Governors: Val Demmings and William Zollars. The USPS Board of Governors has 9 governors, plus the Postmaster General and the Deputy PG, for a total of 11 voting members. NO MORE THAN FIVE MEMBERS MAY BELONG TO THE SAME POLITICAL PARTY. Their terms end after 7 years starting from the date of their officially joining the Board. You'd have to get at least 6 votes on this Board to turf DeJoy out. They're also not supposed to have a conflict of interest when serving on this Board. *Sigh*
He's a mixed bag. He's actually trying to make the Postal Service function like a business. This is hard to do because it really is more of a service, but due to the Nixon era law that converted the postal service from an agencies to a quasi-federal service business, and the later 2006 PAEA that further limited the functionality of the USPS. It's a strange thing. The upshot is that because of DeJoy they've made more progress on getting new equipment and vehicles than in the past. He's made enemies of almost everyone. He has fought against the kickback agreements forced on the postal service by Congress to placate their donors. He's also got no clue how the postal service works and is laser focused on the trucking side of things, which he does know about. Meanwhile, his actions have caused his bosses on the Postal Board of Governors to decide to keep him on, despite being a majority Biden appointees at this point.
I 100% agree. Interestingly, the reason the USPS was created from the Dept of the Post Office, was because of an illegal strike by postal workers in 1971. It was the largest wildcat strike in US history. It resulted in a reform act. The reason it was made into what it is today, is that unions were not allowed to represent civil servants at that time. Unions existed but had no bargaining rights and they mostly lobbied Congress on behalf of members.
Today, federal employees can unionize, and so it would be fine if the USPS returned to being a government service.
Reform act- The laws against striking in the US to protect capital. This is why we see the call for the general strike May 1, 2028- so everyone can get their contracts aligned and not be breaking the law to strike. An under publicized announcement from the AFT to align contracts with the UAW, tell your friends! Tell all the teachers and nurses you know. These unions need to align, and those professions rely on the individuals being made to feel awful about not serving their students/ patients. United we stand.
It seems to me that ballots mailed from rural (=white) areas that have to be picked up and trucked to regional processing centers are more likely to be delayed than ones mailed in cities and larger towns. Isn't this the Republicans shooting themselves in the foot?
Not quite so much. My niece said the mood on Warner Robins AFB was a LOT less Trumpy this year than it was in 2020. Those guys were full MAGA back then; this year they're silent.
Enlisted ranks vote overwhelmingly MAGA; commissioneds (i.e. officers), less so. Most of them have a college degree from one of service academies, ROTC, etc.
Ta, Marcie. It's probably already been said (it's so obvious), but Mississippi? God damn.
In a way, the outcomes don't matter because part of the strategy is to sew misdoubt and confusion and just keep people from voting.
Republicans would prefer that we skip the whole “people voting” thing and just go to them seizing power.
Wow
Republican lawmakers said Fuck The Military. 5th Circuit Judges agreed. Sigh.
And yet the military still skews republican. Sigh.
toto we're not in florida 2000 anymore.
Ratfuckery.

I have bitched endlessly about DeJoy, but never EVER about postal workers. Never.
This.
And also, too: Why is DeJoy STILL there? Ugh.

It's complicated.
Not to you personally but to anyone who votes SERVICES AREN'T BUSINESSES. THEY NEED TO BE RUN TO ....SERVE!

Butter emails etc

It used to be that if I mailed something from Athens, GA to Macon, GA or my sister mailed it to me from Macon, we'd have it within 48 hours.
These days it's more like 2 weeks!
Even mail between two addresses in my town of fewer than 1500 people now gets sent to a processing center more than 200 miles away.
This is all depressing as hell.
Doesn’t matter. Mississippi will never vote Democrat. Too inbred.
Federal government posts jobs in my field in Mississippi. I can't imagine many qualified people ever agree to move there.
Rs can't win a free and fair election so they lie, cheat and steal them.
All while loudly and predictably accusing their opponents of cheating absent any evidence.
Every accusation is a confession.

i just knew that the Fifth Circuit was gonna get into the MAGA election interference act somehow.
President Harris will need to do something about the Fifth Circuit.
And yet military will continue to vote 75-80% gop. WTAF?

I thought J'Biden won the military vote on 2020?
