Some of the Proud Boys got 19 years, but there were only five, or so, of them who got a term over 10 years. Personally, I thought we should have gone all 1776 on them, but that's just me.
A trans woman of color. That has everything negative just waiting to happen, especially now and especially in prison. I wish I could hug her.
Terrible things will always happen in prisons. It's a breeding ground for violence and gang hierarchy. The solution? Fuck if I know. I live in a state where the last prison riot consisted of 14 men refusing to leave their cells because the cable was cancelled. They finally surrendered when promised chocolate pudding and a meeting with the warden about the cable thing. Cable was restored. They were heroes. Prisoners were so grateful they sculpted their effigies in chocolate pudding.
(I may or may not have made some of that up.)
Thanks for another outlaw hero! I still want to hug her. And give her lots and lots of pudding. 💜
This was the last prison riot in my state. I read an account of it, reconstructed from witnesses, and it was horrific:
"In April 2018, seven inmates were killed and more than 20 were injured at Lee Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Bishopville. Prosecutors say the riot started when fights broke out between rival gangs, which spread to the different housing units across the prison."
Prison legal beagles do more work, and much better work, than most attorneys do. Too many lawyers want to be friends of the judge and prosecutor, those in power, than to work and fight the system of corruption; a system that too often denies us our civil and constitutional rights. Most lawyers would prefer to sacrifice those who are accused of criminal acts and those who are incarcerated just to have access to power. Prison legal beagles have no hopes of having access to power, so they can concentrate on working to protect themselves and others through the only means they have available: the judicial system of the United States.
The AEDPA Act that Bill Clinton signed into law has greatly limited the effectiveness of prison legal beagles and should be overwritten to end the limitations on the writ of habeas corpus. But legislation such at PREA, made possible by prisoners such as Dee Farmer and others, goes a long ways to end some of the abuses of our prison system.
Ta, Crip Dyke. Farmer is a Hera. Btw, anyone who supports this cause can do so by donating to Just Detention International. Charity Navigator gives them four out of four stars, and none of the principles is making a lot of money.
Bless her. And thank you Crip for keeping us informed about this ongoing fight for civil rights for all people, especially the marginalized! You are a gift!
From Stonewall to today, we owe so many of our freedoms to our Black Trans sisters. If you are in a same sex marriage to a US Veteran, you will get the same Death Benefits as a heterosexual spouse due to a Black, gender-nonconforming lesbian, Tracey Cooper-Harris and her wife, Maggie Cooper-Harris arguing for just that in front of SCOTUS.
Ms. Farmer is an amazing woman and it is a sin and a shame how much she’s been made to endure. I would have broken like a taco. I also want to note how grateful I am for the astonishing progress in HIV/AIDS treatment, because only a few decades ago, we would have lost her far too soon. But she’s still here.
Thanks so much for introducing me to this remarkable woman, Crip Dyke. Her story first inspired admiration in me, then inspired a bit of introspection…Can I be that brave? The world needs it, just now. Magic 8 ball says,
“Reply hazy, ask again.”
Also, somehow, this detail of her “wearing her [prison] jumpsuit off one shoulder” is one of the most touching/endearing to me in Ms. Farmer’s tale.
Ahhhhhh, just want this world to be one that *doesn’t* try to crush the souls of those who don’t fit a certain rigid narrative. I need to put more effort into making it so.
Love to all you Wonkers out there fighting the good fight. ❤️
The whole point of the prison system, absent throwing everyone in jail eternally for minor financial offenses (WERE TRYINNNNNNG OUR BEST) -the worst parts of America
Is to in theory rehabilitate the offender and make them a productive member of society. It’s not meant to be a lawless hellhole of sexual violence.
Real heroes and the ones who stand up for what’s right even if they’ll never be written about in textbooks
Brava to Dee Farmer. Thank you for this excellent work educating me about her.
20 years for credit card fraud.
Meanwhile, I think the most those 1/6ers got for /trying to overthrow the government and hang the vice president/ was like 3 years.
Jesus fuck

Outstanding report and coverage of this topic.
Thank you for doing this great work here.

Brava, my brilliant friend.
As always...thank you for 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔.
What a brave woman!
I couldn't even stand to read most of the details, honestly. How she lived through it, I can't imagine.

Not all super heroes wear capes.
Many thanks, Dee Farmer! And many thanks, CD!
