I actually found that many native Mandarin (or other dialect) speakers were absolutely ECSTATIC to have someone with whom to practice their English. I literally had people run out of shops when I walked past to say stuff like "Hello! Welcome to China!" It was genuine enthusiasm on their part, which made the whole experience even better :)

My Mandarin is basically limited to "turn left" "turn right" "beer please" and "ice water please" (oh, if you just ask for water, they will bring you hot water by default). Lots of pointing at menus beyond that. But most of the people, particularly in shops and restaurants, were super friendly and helpful.
