Nope, never heard that one. I should add those two phrases, CNN being a hotbed of liberalism and all, were chuckled at all over the building. It took me months to find someone who actually was an Atlanta native working at CNN, he took me around town to visit "War of Northern Aggression" landmarks. Also the house where MLK grew up, the church where he preached, and where he and Coretta are entombed.
Yet she seems to have a streak of decency. I despise the ones like her far more than the obvious Hitler Youth like Ramaswamy or DeSantis. She has got to know what she is supporting, and she does it anyway.
Has anyone figured out if the questioner really was a Dem plant? Not that it makes a big difference but would be super funny if it's a longtime Republican voter.
She just pulled that out of her asz on the spot is my guess.
Besides which, it is completely irrelevant. When someone holds out a chainsaw to you, Nikki, there is no law that says you have to meet it with your face.
She’s so unimpressive. She’s a MAGA clown trying to look like a serious person. It’s not that hard a question to answer, and no doubt there were other issues regarding states’ rights blah blah blah, but the right to own and utilize slaves as cheap labor was THE issue, as freeing slaves was about to become the law of the land with the Emancipation Proclamation, and later 13th Amendment. Southern farmers and plantation owners were desperate to keep their lifestyle and hierarchy. Haley could safely answer the question by explaining what the confederacy believed, without explicitly endorsing their cause herself. “The confederacy believed their economic survival and way of life was under attack by an overreaching government in the north, and if they couldn’t be granted exemption from any emancipation laws, they would simply secede from the Union and form their own government and nation.” Haley somehow isn’t savvy enough to do that? After her experience in the UN and now running for potus, she wasn’t prepared to answer that? Instead it’s word salad about literally anything other than having to mention slavery, which is somehow a third-rail for maga. Kinda tells you all you need to know.
"...but the right to own and utilize slaves as cheap labor was THE issue, as freeing slaves was about to become the law of the land with the Emancipation Proclamation, and later 13th Amendment. Southern farmers and plantation owners were desperate to keep their lifestyle and hierarchy. "
This was WAY down the road in 1860, though. Lincoln had given repeated assurances that he was not going to end slavery, but the South refused to believe it. The 13th Amendment was then not even a gleam in the milkman's eye then, and remember that the Emancipation Proclamation was a wartime measure that ONLy applied to states in rebellion against the Union. Slaves in Maryland, Kentucky, Delaware, and other states remained slaves. The desperation to keep their "peculiar institution" was real, though.
Lastly, "She’s a MAGA clown trying to look like a serious person. " I think rather the opposite. She is basically a normie trying to bring herself down to MAGA level, but she just cannot make it.
Good points, you’re right. I sometimes like to throw my voice into topics I only know a little about. I need to read more about the civil war and the emancipation of slaves. I did notice that both the Proclamation and 13th amendment occurred 3 -4 years into the Civil War. So the timing is important. I’m sure other differences existed. Gone With The Wind doesn’t really provide enough answers.
I agree about Haley. She had a pretty good reputation as Republicans go, and has clumsily gone full maga to stay in the game. It’s pretty pathetic. VR has gone even further, accepting the fact that only J6 and election denying gets the attention of the far right. He’s full of shit.
When we last went to Ohio to visit my mother in law we stayed in a (rather nice) motel in Ft Wayne, Indiana about 15 miles from mom's assisted living place, which was just over the border in Van Wert OH. Along that state road there is a histroical marker sign proclaiming Ohio the birthplace of Ulysses S Grant commanding General of the Army of the Union.
Less than 100 yards from there was a house with a giant Traitors Rag flying from a flagpole. Only New York and Pennsylvania sent more men to the US Army than Ohio.
So , yeah you may lose 'the rest of the country', but that is no longer the vast majority it once was.
A LOT more traitors needed to dangle from the gallows after the Civil War.
Never forget rule #1 for wingnuts: everything is Joe Biden’s fault. #2 is from Ronald “Bedtime for Bonzo” Reagan: “never do anything to hurt a fellow Republican.” The GOP are too malignant, broken and petty to keep that rule anymore. They love any grievance, against Dems first, but absent them, anyone will do, including their own.
I am afraid I cannot agree. She's never evinced any significant intelligence (or even cheap 'cleverness') in anything I've ever heard or reported, and--far worse--she lacks the survival instincts of even a lemming. Olympia Snowe was genuinely smart, but since her retirement Rethug females have ranged from Caribou Barbie to GANGreene to Nimarata.
The economic theory for the Civil War was that the southern tier of states was uniquely situation for the production of the cash crop, cotton. But cotton was a labor intensive crop so the best way to grow and maintain the wealth of large landowners was to not pay their workers. And since even the poorest whites would demand pay the involuntary migrant workers from African (aka slaves) were necessary. And and effort to free the slaves or even force the plantation owners (the billionaires of their day) to PAY for their work was unacceptable. Thus Treason in Defense of Slavery was the only possibility. So while it is possible to defend the Civil War on economic or cultural grounds it all comes down to the same point Slavery was the source of all Southern wealth and had to be defended at all costs. The IMMORALITY of slavery was buried under the love of coin.
Say something stupid, blame it on the person who asked the question, become a GOP frontrunner.
I moved to Atlanta to work at CNN.
Two phrases I learned immediately:
"The War of Northern Aggression!"
"Born in the USA, Southern by the Grace of God!"
How about: "What church do you go to?"
Nope, never heard that one. I should add those two phrases, CNN being a hotbed of liberalism and all, were chuckled at all over the building. My favorite phrase: "Well, bless your heart."
Sometimes said in all seriousness, as in when I told a woman about my dog's surgery, and sometimes said as a devastating rejoinder.
"Bless your heart" usually means "Fukk you and I hope you and your family die in a horrible fire."
"...was drowned out by the sound of all her campaign consultants simultaneously smacking their own foreheads."
1. made me lol
2. delicious mental image
"...smacking their own foreheads."
Yeah, were they holding staplers at the time? Or banana creme pies?
How dare an American voter at a town hall meeting ask a candidate a question!!!
"American"? She SAID (with no evidence or justification whatsoever) it was a Democrat, geez.
Poor Nikki, she'll fall behind that fucking guy if he wins the nomination.
Yet she seems to have a streak of decency. I despise the ones like her far more than the obvious Hitler Youth like Ramaswamy or DeSantis. She has got to know what she is supporting, and she does it anyway.

First, let me say I always enjoy your posts here.
Now, about this:

"showing anything less than love for Confederates and their cause is how you lose GOP primaries nearly 159 years after the Civil War ended."
`
And being a slavery apologist is how you lose the rest of the country. It's what Joe Bob Briggs used to call "hiney in a crack".

Ah yes Operation "Let speak and Republicans make fool of themselves" is all going according to plan.
Leave it to Democrats to force you to make an idiot of yourself by asking you questions! Got it.
That's only the beginning. We then take the exact things Republicans say and play them back without alteration for all the world to witness.
Look, if you are going to start blaming GOP-Frogs for the things they think and say we are gonna be here all DAY.
Yes. That's diabolical of us! They call this "taking my statement out of context."
Jahayzuzzz fucking Keerist on a KRUTCH, this bitch is dumb!
I think the truly tragic bit is that she is in fact NOT DUMB. It makes her sad and bad.
I am afraid I cannot agree. "Biden and the Democrats keep sending Democrat plants"
If they are poinsettias, you can take them home after Christmas.
No poinsettias. They're poisonous to dogs.
So that's her go to position: blame someone else for her troubles. Some President she'd make.
"Mistakes were made" was not invented yesterday, y'know.
There’s a long tradition of that in the Republican Party.
Macaca? That’s a deep cut, Dok. I’m impressed.
I am astonished I can remember that reference.
Remember the good ole days when that was all that was needed to wreck someone's political career?
Yeah. I miss legitimate rape.
*sigh*
She's terrified of the far right wing calling her woke if she mentions slavery.
