I'm so glad to hear your mother's story. I didn't realize it was so much dust by the time it reached the East. Did you ever read The Glory and the Dream by Wm. Manchester? It's a sensational 2-volume book-- very beautiful. My right wing father was alive when I read it and I found that many things he'd told me about the past-- and he was a huge history and news-follower-- were not true. Manchester was a Democrat but not nutty, so you can trust what he says. It starts during the Depression, thru the New Deal and onward. So good--( if you're interested.)

Yes, I'm always interested in good history. I will add it to my list, thanks!

When I read the title I thought of one of my favorite books "The Glory and the Lightning" by Taylor Caldwell. It's history farther back - Ancient Greece. It's a fictional biography of Pericles, leader of Athens during it's golden age when the Parthenon was built - and his beloved and confidant, Aspasia, a beautiful ex-courtesan who spoke out for women's equality and opened the first school for girls in Athens. It's a true story, and it's a wonderful book.

Yep thats been a southern tradition in corruption for years and it applies to both parties...Once elected these special interest crooks would come out of the closet and toss money left and right...at newly elected politicians..and if they did not take the money they would be powerless in their job...They could not pass any legislation in their state...Just like in South American countries and Mexico you take the gold or the lead....Here its take the money...or else.

if keeping the money is not illegal, than surely feeding people food "not fit for human consumption" is.

a) it's not uncommon for places that accept food donations to accept things beyond their expiration date, but it depends on the type of food and how it is packaged. in most states, there are guidelines for what can be accepted beyond its expiration date, but it's all considered "non-perishable" to begin with. sounds like Alabama may have missed the boat on that one.

b) how has Alabama also too missed the boat on claw backs and UB funding? this shit would never fly in TX. if you don't use your funds, they are swept back into GR unless you make a good argument for keeping your unexpended balance for the next biennial budget. that means you can't use it for a beach house. you do have to keep using it for its intended purpose. you want a beach house, you make a secretive non-profit, reimburse their expenses rather than approving their budget up front, appoint your buddies to the board and have them pay for your mansion just like George P. Bush did.

c) it's worth mentioning that most people in jail are poor people awaiting adjudication. they are not GUILTY! GUILTY! LOCK THEM UP! and it would be nice if the sheriff's defenders remembered that the next time they get in a fist fight with Cousin Clive, they may end up having to eat this shit if they can't afford bail.

d) another thing TX does actually well: prison food. this may surprise you, but part of how our jails work is that they have on-site farms and/or ranches where they grow or raise food consumed in the other prisons. and each site specializes so there's enough to ship around to the other jails. we have a declining prison population, so there have been several closures and they are considering using the old facilities, already set up as really great places to teach urban farming, to be annexes for juvenile detention kids to continue the tradition or to host after school programs for at-risk kids (because the number of young farmers in the country actually is declining and we're going to have to deal with that sooner than later) and/or for jerb retraining programs for people whose jobs have become obsolete.

Unfortunately, we have let the South control our politics for too long.

Since the very moment we became a "we". Electoral college, three-fifths compromise.

No no no! That doesn't say NOT fit for human consumption, it is the initials, N-O-T, which stands for "Num-nums Of Tastiness" and then clearly "fit for human consumption" is right next to it. Because it is.

Perfectly understandable misunderstanding, you see.

Don't be silly, if the sheriff's defenders get in a fist fight with Cousin Clive, nothing will happen to them! They're the sheriff's defenders!
