When my boys were toddlers they did more violent acts than yelling and kicking shit. And yet somehow as a woman I was able to control my temper and not shot them. Maybe men are too emotional.

LOL Megyn Kelly thinks kicking a taillight is a felony?

You notice Pretti never pulled his gun, unlike ICE guys, who will leap at any excuse or no excuse at all.

I’ve said this elsewhere, but we really need to understand a Republican’s belief in the sacredness of private property. If you kick a taillight, it’s just like you chucked a brick through the Rose Window at Chartres. Why, Mr Piggy was practically in tears about that poor minivan.

So, was Alex targeted? If so, then it's not murder but PRE-MEDITATED MURDER.

It really needs no repeating, but Megyn Kelly is a truly sad, lonely and horrible human being. Pretti isn’t a “poster boy,” he’s a murder victim. And his destruction of property 11 days prior has nothing to do with his death. He didn’t like ICE, and he was taking to the street to protest. I’m sure it’s a complicated topic - does the cruelty of ICE and this administration justify kicking a taillight. I personally think it undermines the power of protest. We want to be free to protest and legally protected by the constitution. But the right are looking for a reason to put protestors down. Destruction of property is an easy way for them to retaliate with needless and excessive force. People like Kelly enjoy that opportunity. Pretti was courageous to be on the street, expressing himself and his anger at ICE. But any act that can be characterized as damaging property or assault/obstruction is going to give the right the opportunity they are thirsty for. He didn’t deserve to be hurt, certainly not killed, for kicking a taillight that day. But that act happening 11 days prior only confirms that he resented ICE deeply. The video evidence from the day he was murdered stands, and depicts a protestor using a cell phone and reaching to help a woman. He was armed, and although he never reached for his weapon, the mere sight of it caused a panic in the poorly trained ICE agents, and a mob effect where they acted impulsively, emotionally and irrationally in a clumsy, chaotic attempt to neutralize an incorrectly perceived threat.

Protest is vital for a healthy democracy to push back on a cruel government. There is power there. With it comes a responsibility to be very careful. This regime, especially these weaponized and angry ICE agents, are looking for an excuse to teach liberal protestors lessons. Good and Pretti didn’t die in vain. What’s happening in Minnesota and in America have been affected by their deaths. Just be careful out there, people. We know exactly what engaging with these masked thugs can mean.

However, a taillight is not someone's face. It is not an offense deserving of death.

ICE agents are not trained at all. They're being hired when they walk through the door of the recruiting office. They are criminals themselves, many were violent felons who attacked police on Jan 6th.

We cannot criticize a man who kicked a taillight and who otherwise led a life of kindness and compassion. I agree with your comment except for your hand-wringing about protesters who commit small acts of outrage like Pretti's. In the face of such horrific recklessness committed by ICE thugs, it's ludicrous.

The right frequently characterize protest by the left in violent terms. They often refer to the property damage and vandalism of that occurred in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. We are dealing with a cruel, unprofessional and poorly trained organization that feels immune from consequences for using excessive force to respond to non-violent protest. The vast majority of liberal protests are peaceful. The ones that aren’t can undermine the power and efficacy of peaceful protest.

I’m not criticizing Pretti. I have immense sympathy for him and his family. He may have been targeted by ICE for the prior tail light incident, we don’t know yet. Either way, ICE and this administration in general are eager to find excuses to hurt us. I would caution people to be careful about how you express your opposition. Right now they have the support of the federal government and the scotus. If our democracy holds, we will take back the House overwhelmingly in November, and the rest of the government in 28.

Marycat2021's avatar

The very possibility that Pretti was murdered over a broken taillight doesn't faze you?

You may "caution" people to temper their opposition, but you are wrong to do so. Peaceful protest isn't working. Even the Democrats in Congress generally ignore it. I'm not a violent person, but telling people to "be careful how you express your opposition" also covers the First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

I lived in Egypt during their revolution in 2011. The Egyptians engaged in work stoppages, student walkouts, and they shut down airports, blocked roads and blocked access to the presidential palace. They didn't put on cute costumes and dance in the streets. Trump doesn't give a crap so long as he remains in office and has Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries keeping the Democrats feckless and weak.

Ta, Dok. We all have Pretti Good reasons to loathe and detest ICE. As for Renée and Alex, may their memories be a blessing, and may their murderers face justice, sooner rather than later.

Comic strip? We don't write comic strips here. Were you mad at Tom Tomorrow or Ruben Bolling?

In any case, sorry we just sat by and did nothing, nothing at all to stop Trump, apart from everything we published from 2023 to today.

OK, I'll bite, what opportunities did we miss to prevent this crop of fascists from coming to power? (FYI Wonkette readers by and large are dependable voters) So if I understand you correctly WE are responsible for what fascists, buoyed by 99% of elected republicans and those on the SCOTUS, do?

Perhaps he thinks we should have assassinated Trump in 2016?

I don't see any other way to parse his comment.

"because only the worst scum in the world commit property damage." Uh...how about the East fucking Wing?! It wasn't damaged, it was obliterated and turned into landfill.

Shootings can only be justified by the events and circumstances of the time it happened. Incidents from nearly two weeks prior are irrelevant except they might show that CPB goons knew of Pretti from before and targeted him for murder.
