I sure hope there is a hell for unrepentant evil doers.

Yes, members of Congress would need to be invited, but local building inspectors and codes enforcement officers do not. In most local government structures, the mayor is in charge of all of them, so he would likewise not need to be invited to accompany any of them on an inspection

RRJKR's avatar

Thank you for pointing out that these ICE detention centers are NOT government facilities. The ones in LA are owned and operated by the Lasalle corp. another private prison company As such they are subject to local codes enforcement just like any other business. Local officials have every right, actually the duty, to inspect them for compliance to local codes on an ongoing basis.. Building inspectors do not have to announce their visits beforehand, sometimes they will as a courtesy, but they are not obligated to do so. They can just show up and demand to inspect your property as they see fit. Anyone who owns investment properties knows this and deals with it every day.

Why oh why doesn't shame work the other way?

Oh right, a conservative media ecosystem and the rich rilling up the rubes.

Been watching this crap all my 50 years, and it just gets worse and worse, while decent people just keep getting better and better, but it's almost like they've won this stupid game that only they were playing.

Had this convo with someone the other night at dinner. The Fox talking points were clear, they HAD NO RIGHT to be there. WRONG. It's their job. If you have nothing to hide, why all the kerfuffle?

RRJKR's avatar

They have every right, even the duty to be there. If you own investment properties you never want to get on the wrong side of local building inspectors and codes enforcement officers. They can, and will, make your life a living Hell if you piss them off. There is no such thing as a building that is 100% compliant and they know that They have the capacity to bury you in codes violation citations if they have a mind to.

"M"'s avatar

"The Fox talking points"

There you go -- there's the problem

Those billionaire-owned private prisons who contracted with the criminals currently calling themselves "federal government" were CLOSED BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT UP TO NEW JERSEY CODE TO HOUSE HUMANS.

And then the "federal government" quietly re-opened them again.

THAT is why the Mayor was there.

And please remind the "someones" in your life who still prefer to believe Fox is a "news source" *even though they themselves used the admission they are NOT a news source AS A DEFENSE IN COURT TO A LAWSUIT* that

HABBA BABBA had to DROP THE CHARGES because SHE DID NOT HAVE A CASE under these facts.

And the Congresspeople were LEGALLY THERE, DOING THEIR OVERSIGHT JOBS.

And I am willing to bet - because I refuse to watch Fox and get my brain mangled by them (it came out years ago that they are literally using brainwashing tactics to keep minds glued to their channels) - that the only video that "someone" saw was what it turns out was EDITED ... instead of what came off one of the (supposed) ICE thugs' own cameras bc they forgot to turn them off (after being ordered by the "feds" to do so back in February).

"Alina Habba, ... now says she is gonna FEDERAL CRIME CHARGE Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver with having “assaulted, impeded and interfered with law enforcement”"

Question: given the Speech and Debate Clause in the Constitution, how is what Rep McIver did different than what Lindsey "Karen" Graham tried to pull by inserting himself into the GA election count in 2020? Other than:

* Rep McIver was performing oversight of a situation in her own district (as is part of the responsibilities for a Rep within her/his district);

* Graham was performing oversight of the election as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee:

* McIver is a POC and Graham is Melanin-deficient.

And let me add:

> "We can't criminalize senators [or Representatives] doing their job when they have a constitutional requirement to fulfill.

It would be irresponsible for me, in my opinion, as Chairman of the committee not to try to find out what happened.

...

Fulton County is one of the most liberal jurisdictions in the country. I fear this will spread. That in the next election - Democrats may be on the other side of this.

...

What I did was consistent with my job as being a United States Senator

...

I think the system in this country is getting off the rails and we have to be careful not to use the legal system as a political tool." https://www.lgraham.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=B63B7217-2B27-48B4-9655-CF2605A13F58

* Will Graham call Ms Habba and tell her to drop the charges since Rep McIver was "doing [her] job when they have a constitutional requirement to fulfill[?]"

* The responsibility to find out what happened (spoiler alert: nothing happened) that Graham is claiming was answered almost immediately after J6 and ongoing when ~60 courts ruled that there was no fraud.

* I might be mistaken, but it certainly sounds as if Graham has a problem with Fulton County being liberal and not conservative.

* He's concerned that the Dems/libs would try to pervert elections when it is de rigueur for the RINOs.

* Is Karen going to have a heart to heart with the Fulvous Fuckwad about "not [using] the legal system as a political tool?

I, a non American of European descent,, immediately noticed that she was highly visible for three reasons: bright red suit, as you say more melanin, and also woman. Quite unlike the rest of the pushing, jostling crowd. Of course the camera picked her out, and of course that's the reason they chose to charge. What all the other individuals were doing couldn't be picked among all the others - because they cannot be clearly and consistently identified.

Oh, and intimidation.

Helen's avatar

Question for the lawyers if ever this case gets to court. Does there have to be an identified victim for an assault charge to be upheld?

Cos I couldn't pick out which specific official she's supposed to have body slammed, with who's pushing whom? Do they need a witness/complainant to swear "she hit me" as corroborative testimony? Or is the video evidence enough, if they can somehow get a jury of 12 racist, sexist MAGAs?

Erisian's avatar

Videos show no one pushing her, but so what? Rep McIver was trying to carry out her responsibilities as a Representative, and the ICE assholes blocked her access to a federal facility so she could do just that.

IOW, IMO, it was the ICE agents violating federal laws; but Habba doesn't see it like that since she's just another RINO asshat following the orders of the Fulvous Fuckwad (to help politicize and weaponize the DOJ).

(I'm not a lawyer, and have no legal training, but the optics were pretty clear to me.)

Helen's avatar

Sorry, sorry, just rereading my original non comment it occurred to me that it might read ambiguously. By "intimidation" I didn't mean Rep McIver was intimidating anyone - she clearly was not. I meant her arrest is a tactic intended to intimidate those opposing T****. But I don't think you can argue political persecution as a defense? Was T**** allowed to?

Helen's avatar

I've heard there are a number of different clips out there, so perhaps we're viewing different ones? In any case, what we saw or thought we saw doesn't matter - only ones who decide the verdict count.

"M"'s avatar

"what Rep McIver did"

She DIDN'T DO ANYTHING other than show up to DO HER LEGALLY MANDATED OVERSIGHT JOB

Let's start with that

HuffPost Updates: "Trump told reporters outside a Capitol Hill meeting Tuesday that he sees no problem with the arrest of Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver (D.J.), who was charged with assault Monday after she was involved in a tussle outside an ICE detention facility earlier this month.

“The days of woke are over,” Trump said.

“That woman, I have no idea who she is,” he added. “That woman was out of control. She was shoving federal agents. The days of that crap are over. We’re going to have law and order.”"

"I have no idea who she is"

Why don't more people note that the president is forever denying knowing who people are? People he should know? You're the president--you should actually KNOW the members of Congress.

"M"'s avatar

"Why don't more people note that the president is forever denying knowing who people are?"

Because mainstream media is complicit

Particularly when it comes to the dignity, rights, and survival of people of color, particularly Black people, in this white supremacist country

Yesterday Paul and I went out for a springtime ride to blow the stink of all the shit that's happening off. It was a wonderful drive until....let me back up to the beginning. Berkshire County has had ongoing ICE raids that have mobilized residents here to hold all kinds of awareness and action meetings. We have large food farms dotted all over this county so --- you know how these farms work. They need workers. All kinds of workers. Here's an overview of what Berkshire county has and has done:

Berkshire County has a long history deeply intertwined with the farm-to-table movement, dating back to the early 19th century. The first agricultural fair in the United States was held in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, in 1807. This early focus on local agriculture laid the foundation for the modern farm-to-table movement. In 1986, one of the country's first two Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms was established in the Berkshires, showcasing the region's pioneering spirit in sustainable food practices. Today, Berkshire County is a major hub for farm-to-table initiatives, with organizations like Berkshire Grown playing a vital role in connecting farmers and consumers.

Back to yesterday. As we were driving and just one hilltown over from where we are located in Windsor we saw an unmarked law enforcement car drive-by. We've learned our "unmarked" local cars are black this one was white. Within a couple of seconds a second white unmarked drove by. There is a big farm in this neighboring hilltown owned by a wonderful young man who has turned his land into an organically grown paradise. We haven't seen a single worker out in the fields. We all know what this means. I love it here and with what we know is happening I have committed myself to doing whatever I can to fight these fascist pigs. There are a lot of folks in Berkshire County that feel exactly the way Paul and I do. Fuck those fucking pigs.

I am so grateful Zyx and I are learning to grow our own food and that we have the land to do it on. And fuck those nazi scum.

Holly - Yep it's me's avatar

That's excellent! I'm hoping our farm stands don't disappear this summer. If I didn't have rheumatoid arthritis with the added Lyme arthritis I'd be out in the yard making raised beds full of stuff but sadly those days for me are over. However! Paul is getting ready to put in his garden, but if we ate what he grows nothing would ever get done around here.

Paul played this for me the other day when I said I needed to knock down all the winter cobwebs in the cabin and then I said fuck it....

It has become necessary for me to do this routine several times a day lately and then again before dinner and after dinner and before bed and when I wake up during the night and then in the very early hours and....all the fucking time lately. Whatever helps us with this fucking timeline, right?
