Alabama ranked in at #45 with an overall score of 35.62. The quality of education ranks in at 36 and the educational attainment score sits at 44. A separate study by WalletHub from 2023 took a look at the most and least educated cities.Feb 27, 2024
Least educated - Not something to brag about at all. I do not understand how the more educated people in Alabama stand being ranked near the bottom. I would be absolutely mortified.
True story: my two boys graduated from a good public high school in Texas and were told by their college counselors that they could get a free ride to either U of Alabama or U of Oklahoma. Thats because public school grads from those states can barely read, and never took Calculus.
My wife, who grew up on the Mississippi coast, went there for marine biology and went on to get an education masters at Liberty University and a PhD in STEM Education and Development from Texas Tech.
She also taught for ten years at a 99% Black school in Mobile Alabama, currently teaches at a high school that is 60% Latino/ESL, is a safe space for all of her students, married a cis male who transitioned to trans female and has supported and loved her the entire way through multiple surgeries, was maid of honor at her friends' gay marriage, is horrified by Trump and thrilled with Harris, and has dedicated her life to truthful education, supporting the kids she teaches in every way she can, and ensuring they get a fair shot.
She's the kindest, most compassionate human I've ever in my life met which is why I married her and I'm grateful to her every day, as are so many of her students,
Great story, Dee, very personal, thanks for being willing to share it. I would certainly hire her. (Although I'm retired and am not going to be hiring anybody...sorry.) If she's still in teaching, I hope she can continue to teach the truth.
Her story is highly unusual for Alabama grads. And for Liberty U as well! I think she should write her life story up, or maybe you are the writer and she's the science person, in which case maybe you should publish her life story.
Haha I am the writer with her providing the grounding facts and reality. You're very welcome, though. It's easy to write off everyone (no pun intended) in a red state or going to a certain school but there are always exceptions and sometimes we go where we have to in order to get the education we need to fight back against the ignorance. (For the record, she's absolutely horrified at this and is reaching out to the college as an alumni to voice her disdain for them not even trying to fight it)
Alabama entices out of state students interested in engineering with a promise of in-state tuition. I'd like to think that some prospective students would take a pass on the school, but I feel like a lot of them don't care either way.
Alabama has some of the top athletes in the country in basketball and football, and a lot of them could go anywhere they want and get scholarships and NIL money, next time the transfer portal opens up. And a 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘳 percentage of them are people of color compared to the university’s demographics. Sure would be a shame if they all transferred.
Don’t honestly know, and not going to look it up, but this being Alabama, find it difficult to believe there’s not *at least* one “University program, space or benefit” with a marked Xtian “preference”.
Edit: Apparently there’s like *thirty* of them (thanks to ShrillKitty, who *did* look it up) ... !
I liked the suggestion by somebody smarter than myself that young black athletes (and their allies) should boycott schools pulling this shit. Let all of their Fooball programs suck. Do not underestimate how much support those schools get from their teams.

GOODBYE, Evangelical Students Union! ADIOS, Maranatha! FAREWELL, Christian Students Organization!
Let's have a close look at ALL THIRTY of U of Al's religious student organizations:
LBJ nailed it two generations ago when he said "If you can convince the lowliest white man that he is better than a black man you'll have their votes forever." or words to that effect.
I remember watching a board game review where the reviewer mentioned the three colored powers; red, blue and white. Red powers were offensive in nature, blue was defensive, and white power which involved slavery and committing religious crusades. His humor can be a little dark, so he made a point to emphasize that was what the white powers in the game revolved around.

I wouldn’t hire anyone who went to that school.

Both said no thanks.

Ta, Gary. Now I feel like listening to Neil Young.

See my comment above!
If they tried to do that at the University of Maryland, there would be an immediate general strike of all students, faculty, and staff.
Why don't those Alabama sportsball players just say they won't play until the bill is repealed? Some things are more important than money.
The system is such that for some of these athletes, sportsball is their best chance at a better, financially stable life.
New Alabama recruits should rescind their commitments and go elsewhere.

And Alabama ranks where on the scale of the 50 states?

Square-dancing club, oh wait, some of those folks think dancing is sin.

Some of the semi-pro football and basketball franchises would die.
Poor dears.
BSU needs to sue the fuckers and make them prove that their services are not permissible under that vague law.
MASS DEPORTATIONS! Woo Hoo!
it is not panic.
They know precisely what they are doing- getting to discriminate once more.
Remember: a level playing field means white people are not in control, so it is therefore bad.
To the oppressor equality is torture.
OH LET THE LAWSUITS BEGIN

Finally! I can go to the Evangelical Students Union and blast Watain’s Sworn to the Dark in peace.
'Where de white wimmen be at??'

“Not even joking about that.”
Roll on out, y'all--it's the Lowest Tide ever, and it stinks just like you think.
