BEHAAAAVE YOURSELVES, It's The Dems' Climate Change Town Hall!
Stupid Democrats, it's probably snowing somewhere RIGHT NOW.
When Jay Inslee dropped out of the presidential campaign, he told the other candidates that his extensive climate plan, easily the most complete blueprint for addressing global warming in time to prevent the worst possible effects, was now an "open source" document that any candidate should feel free to adopt. Elizabeth Warren, who had already released a climate plan and has included climate components in many of her other plans, has now signed on to the Inslee plan, saying Inslee's roadmap to net zero carbon emissions by 2030 works just dandy with her presidential agenda. And she'll go it one better, she says, adding an extra trillion dollars over 10 years to achieve an
economic transition to clean and renewable electricity, zero emission vehicles, and green products for commercial and residential buildings.
All told, a federal investment of $3 trillion will leverage additional trillions in private investment and create millions of jobs. And we will achieve:
By 2028, 100% zero-carbon pollution for all new commercial and residential buildings;
By 2030, 100% zero emissions for all new light-duty passenger vehicles, medium-duty trucks, and all buses;
By 2035, 100% renewable and zero-emission energy in electricity generation, with an interim target of 100% carbon-neutral power by 2030.
That extra trillion would come from repealing Trump's big fat tax cuts for rich fuckwads, making Warren the last Democratic candidate to use that particular piggy bank in a spending proposal.
Since we've already gone over Inslee's plan (and Warren's earlier plan), we won't get all wrapped up in the details; go read her position paper released yesterday. We will point out that -- like the Green New Deal and several other candidates' proposals -- the Warrinsleen Plan makes jobs and labor rights a central part of the proposal, because if you're going to transform a nation's energy economy, you damn well need to talk job creation, and Inslarren makes clear all that construction and new manufacturing will mean millions of jobs.
So good on Warren for signing on to the Inslee plan, and now we'd like to see other candidates do the same. Props to Julián Castro , who released his own climate plan this week; the goals in his plan are straight from Inslee as well: net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and $10 trillion in spending to transition from fossil fuels to clean power. We won't attempt to summarize all the plans out there, because in advance of tonight's CNN's climate town hall tonight (it's not a debate!), anyone who hadn't already released a climate plan has gotten one out there. But look, here are some links to new plans by Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, and Kamala Harris as well. As Mother Jones climate reporter Rebecca Leber tweeted yesterday, this week is Climate Plan Christmas. And best of all, nobody will have coal in their stocking ever again.
Also too, about that CNN climate town hall: It will run for SEVEN GODDAMN HOURS, from 5 p.m. to midnight Eastern. All 10 of the Dems who qualified for the debate later this month will participate (schedule below). This here will be your dedicated Climate Town Hall open thread, but we will not be embedding a livestream, since CNN is being A IDIOT and streaming itonly on its homepage. But there's the linky, right there! Because the thing will run about a million hours, we will not be liveblooging, but Yr Dok Zoom plans to watch a fair chunk of it and will show up in the comments until he gets bored or Thornton the cat pees on something. Here's the schedule, copy-pasted because why would we do anything else? All times Eastern Daylight:
5 p.m.: Castro will be interviewed by CNN's Wolf Blitzer
5: 40 p.m: Yang will take questions from Blitzer
6: 20 p.m.: Harris will be interviewed by CNN's Erin Burnett
7 p.m.: Klobuchar will appear with Burnett
8 p.m.: Biden will be interviewed by CNN's Anderson Cooper
8: 40 p.m.: Sanders will be interviewed by Cooper
9: 20 p.m.: Warren will be interviewed by CNN's Chris Cuomo
10 p.m.: Buttigieg will sit down with Cuomo
10: 40 p.m.: O'Rourke will appear with CNN's Don Lemon
11: 20 p.m.: Booker will be interviewed by Lemon
We are actually looking forward, sort of, to watching Andrew Yang explain why he thinks it's a bad idea to talk about climate change when there's a hurricane on. Yesterday, Yang tweeted at CNN to postpone the town hall so it could keep showing the same weather radar shots again and again.
It would probably be better for @cnn to report on Hurricane Dorian and the actual effects of climate change rather… https: //t.co/4nDw6uM0dv
— Andrew Yang (@Andrew Yang) 1567520820.0
That didn't really go over so great; one environmental news site said Hurricane Dorian makes for an excellent, even urgent real-world backdrop for talking about climate policy:
We respectfully disagree with @AndrewYang - this is the exact time - because of #HurricaneDorian -- to talk about s… https: //t.co/uOG4OwLqYt
— Our Daily Planet (@Our Daily Planet) 1567610715.0
We assume Yang will at least show up, instead of going to play golf, so that's better than the status quo. He'd better not say he'll fight climate change by limiting automation, though.
And finally, let us not forget, Yr Wonkette has lovely new Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg tees (with three different designs for that guy!), and if you didn't like the boobage on the old shirts there are NO BOOBS on any of them.

Which isn't the reason we have no John Delaney tee, but if we need a reason, that works!
We'll see you in the post-apocalyptic hellscape, or at least right here in the Climate Town Hall Open Thread! But not until after 5, silly.

We are well and truly fucked.
I understand completely. I watched Irma roar up 75, right towards me. I questioned the decision to stay put at that point. It had been mostly a cat 4 but had whittled down after landfall, to a Cat 2. I was braced for impact of the eye, then suddenly the Weather Channel placed the eye north of me in Tampa. Then the power went out, and I had to track it on my phone. Somehow the eye swerved and missed me. I was lucky. May your luck hold as well.
