No sensible or moral person thinks that families should be broken up like that or that little kids should have to face a judge and be their own counsel. No one really wants people just living their lives, hurting no one, should be sent to random concentration camps in random countries.

All of us old timers around here were raised around immigrants .. our parents, our grandparents, war brides, more recent waves of boat people from Laos and Vietnam, you name it. And the place I lived in was a small city at best.

Remember, like 70 percent of US 'Murcans were opposed to allowing those Jewish folk on the ships into US 'Murca during the 1930s, and some of those refugees were sent to camps after being forced to return to Germany.

Also, a popular slogan of the 1800s was "The only good Indian is a dead Indian" and the 14th amendment did not include Indians, at least initially. They were Dred Scotted into non-citizenship.

The cruelty has always been the point.

I like to think we're progressing a little bit. Maybe those of us that are should come up with a name for ourselves... like, "Progs" or... "Anti-Regressives"... or.... gimme a minute...

Maybe it's because they finally realize that when Trump said "illegals" what he actually meant was HUMAN BEINGS.

when you come right down to it, the only 'legal' people in this country were already here when the first shipload of foreigners arrived...The white folks, no matter their nationality, have always apparently viewed this acreage as theirs. Not the Indians, the Jews, the (gasp) catholics, and for a very long time the Irish and assorted other 'races'.

There was also a period when people who did not conform to their particular brand of Chrisitanity or color had to wear a bell to announce their presence just to be able to pass through their town, and if you went anywhere you needed a signed letter of reference from wherever you came from to get to where you needed to go. Not so many years ago, actually. Even in the late 1700s this was still an important rule.

There's also the bit about how refocusing nigh-all law enforcement in this country towards rounding up non-criminal immigrants means there's nobody keeping us safe by investigating and chasing down actual violent criminals (mostly white, but occasionally others, admittedly, even (rarely) immigrants). Don't forget to mention that part.

GROCERIES!!!

Fog of Jen's avatar

My guess is that the ads telling people that actually, grocery prices are down are not convincing the people who have to pay them. That is why.

I am cynical, and any port in a storm and all that, but it is a bit sickening that Americans only care when it hurts their personal pocketbook.

You know the grocery that really went up in price?

Ground coffee.

Red Can brand and Blue Can brand are now running $14 a can, and Golden Arches Can is a good $24.

Could it be because the U.S, imports all its coffee?

Naaah, couldn't be...

My store sells a whole-bean version of the same coffee they charge $1.50 more for if it's preground. And there's a grinder right there in the store.

Coffee, as I understand it, is a specialized product that was once a luxury because of the delicate nature of it once harvested. Im not even sure this country has the right climate for it. It also begins to deteriorate in flavor and quality the minute the beans are harvested. I don't object to the process, but I do object to the trickery to get us to buy the 'expensive stuff' when the lesser labeled and advertised is just as good, not just as famous. I've learned to look for the 'unfamous' labels, and it works just fine.

High-grade coffee, Arabica, is grown on mountain slopes. As climate change takes hold, farmers find themselves literally retreating, and replanting, up the slopes. (Lower-grade Robusta, as the name implies, is less finicky about growing conditions.)

You are correct that the U.S. doesn't have the right climate for coffee, except for small specialty crops in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

It sure seems like a whole lot of people depend too much on often-sad experience to clue them in on what they think and believe. People shouldn't need to actually SEE innocent old gardeners or restaurant workers set upon and savaged by government-approved fascist thugs to understand that such things are cruel and evil. The smallest bit of self-reflection should do it. Or a basic introduction to ethics in some high-school or college course. That would help, too.

one of the concerning things about this alien immigrants stuff: I am priviliged to know several folks who have emigrated from other places, and they are intelligent, hard working, determined to succeed.,..and it would appear that even if you are the child of 'naturalized' immigrants, there's a good chance you will be sent back to a country you've never even been to...and consider this: we are all immigrants, unless we can prove which Indian tribe we descended from...this country is solid immigrants, all the way down...

I’m struggling with the aftermath of what happened in my community in Camarillo on Thursday. Our streets were militarized against people committing the ghastly crime of being at work. As of this morning most families have not been able to contact their loved ones.

Republicans are hoping for the ACA effect, where Americans slowly realized the benefits of the Affordable Care Act: when all the immigrants are gone, America will become the shining city on the hill. Except that was never going to happen.

America has relied on slave labor or undocumented workers since it's very inception.

Donald Trump used undocumented Polish workers to demolish the beautiful Bonwit Teller department store, so he could build the vulgar Trump Tower. He paid them a pittance, and they had to fight him to get even that paltry amount.

Indeed, I just drove through my local Chinatown, chock full of folks selling produce on the sidewalk, various knick-knacks, and I thought "surely these are all American citizens and naturalized so-and-so's?" and I wondered how the neighborhood would change if ICE changed their focus a little.

When we've made the government sane again, the second step needs to be the abolition of ICE and the entire immigration system. You want to come to the US? Fill out a form, tell us where you lived, where you're going to live, what you'd like to do, and which of a series of six puppies you think is "most cute." Then, we give you an id card, and that's it. They've been bitching about "immigrant invasion" for years. Let's open the gates, and see what happens. My guess? Tomatoes get picked, construction booms, and taco trucks appear on every corner. And it will be good.

The first step, of course, will be to update the tax code so billionaires do not exist. Foreign billionaires are welcome to visit as well, but will need to pay an entry fee of one billion dollars per day. Why should we subsidize foreign nations poor fiscal decisions by letting their policy failures freely corrupt our nation?

If we did a sweep of "immigrants' and the offspring of such, how far back in history are we supposed to go? We are all immigrants, in that regard. Including our president, most if not all the members of congress, and all those people who are related to the first non-Indians who came here in boats from France, Britain, Spain, and elsewhere.
