This Oregonian feels the same way. At least we have a death penalty moratorium, but jeez...25 years.

Jesus fuckin' Christ, man, did you have to put this ON EVERY GODDAMN POST TODAY? REALLY? I get it, you want people to read the fuckin' article, but I'm sick to fucking death of seeing as the first comment on every fuckin' page when only the two most recent comments are what's shown.

Hubbard said she approached police later at the crime scene but was told, “It’s a known drug house … we don’t need your help,’” according to the deposition.

"We don't need your help," might be an acceptable reply if the cops were any good at closing cases, but they're not. They should be taking all the fucking help they can get instead of simply railroading another Black guy.

Zap's avatar

But railroading black guys is their job.

Boojum's avatar

You're overlooking the fact that, if they took her help, they might lose the chance to railroad another Black guy and THIS SHALL NOT BE!

Rooster Cogburn's avatar

Well, they seem to be pretty good at railroading random black guys without any help.

Prosecutors rarely admit wrongdoing for cases like this, from what I've seen.

They either excuse it by saying they made a call based on evidence at the time, or similarly dubious justification..

Malcolm Campbell's avatar

Prosecutors lie. A prosecutor who fails to get convictions is unlikely to be a prosecutor for very long.

meh's avatar

More abuse of power, and behavior that should be absolutely unlawful.

I'd like to see prosecutors' ability to lie in the service of their work prohibited, with very stuff penalties for doing so.

Once again, abuse of authority is the one crime I don't think should be forgiven, especially when it suborns the justice system. Those who do so further undermine trust in a system already (deservedly) regarded as less than credible because of hundreds of years of explicitly and covertly racist, sexist, and classist behavior that ignores the pronciple of equality before the law.

(apologies for the ragey posts on this but I get SO PISSED OFF by abuse of authority - it is one of stalking horses of fascism).

Oregon was whites only until 1926.

While Oregon has a terrible, white supremacist history that is not entirely true. Black people already living in Oregon were exempt from the Exclusion Law. Portland's NAACP chapter, founded in 1914, is the oldest continuously chartered one west of the Mississippi. Either way, its history is telling. Portland is one of the few cities I can think of where the majority of the population is white (SLC being another, maybe?) Also, I remember the dust-up when I was attending UO over denaming halls on campus named for KKK - or at least KKK adjacent - members.

Salem is the state capital, but isn't it in the middle of redneck country? Is that why an overt racist on the police force could become a detective?

meh's avatar

I was in Medford - massive redneck country - when the local gov't did some things that the local proto-MAGA didn't much like. Those bastards were lined up, with their pickup trucks, and their fucking AR-15s, around the particular building.

I happened to be working in that building (for Medford PD) and it Was Not Comforting to run that gauntlet.

I really think when that happens, a proper show of force should be laid down to indicate to the LARPers that what they're doing is not, in fact, a LARP. This is the sort of thing that is a rehearsal for Jan 6th.....

theCryptofishist's avatar

Like an overt racist on the police force in Los Angeles could become a detective like Mark Furman?

kiddo went to Willamette Uni which is in Salem. There are really nice areas but the area around the uni can be worrisome after dusk.

If your gross negligence or deliberate actions result in the incarceration of someone who cannot be found guilty, then you should pay the sentence they received or would receive.

meh's avatar

This is 100% supportable for both DA and arresting officers, and they should be sentenced to general population rather than the protected status they currently enjoy when incarcerated.

Such a risk would chill the possibility of railroading someone, especially after a few of them - including the pale ones - go to jail and discover the joys of being an unprotected inmate.

Or they get credit for time served on any future crimes they may wish to commit. Doubt anyone would take advantage of that offer, but.......

Villago Delenda Est 🇺🇦's avatar

Here's a fun fact: Salem is the third largest city in Oregon, as well as the state capital. LEO outfits in Oregon are heavily into the slave patrol mentality. Just look at Portland, where Proud Boys have allies in the Portland Police Bureau who are open about their sentiments. Strong fascist vibes in Oregon law enforcement, and it only gets worse as you get to smaller communities.

Cateck's avatar

How on earth are we okay with the fact that these kinds of things regularly happen and no one is held responsible?

The same way we seem to be ok with police routinely murdering people. And the way we seem to be ok with children getting murdered in school. I don't know but it just keeps going on and on.
