Oh look, our President is speaking at Normandy this morning, and only ABC is covering it. CBS, NBC, and FOX love Trump too much, he'll cut their corporate taxes, that's more important than those D-Day losers.

Until this week, it's been rainy and ~12C here in Europe. Last couple weeks had historic floods in Bavaria and surrounding areas.

SkeptiKC's avatar

I am quite literally scared shitless of what's coming insofar as weather events.

Rocket Cat's avatar

Me too, as a Houstonian I am dealt with two climate change derecho straight line wind event (plus flood and major power outages) just this month! Today it will be 98F with heat index above 110F

I gotta work in it XD The other day it got so humid I could not even breathe.

Not looking forward to high summer and hoping like hell I can finish up this block before that hits

Insomnia remains the bane of my existence. And now the stupid TV is out and I don't know how to reset it. One of these days I'm going to have to have paul show me how in the hell to do that.

If it weren't for books and computers I'd be SOL.

Two of the more prominent articles about creative artists and musicians leaving online services that plan to train AI with their art/music or sell that ability to an AI company. The Adobe boycott, if the artists follow through, will be an monumental shift in the digital graphic art world.

AI has basically killed my retirement gig. For the last 8 years, I was able to make a decent chunk of change writing blog posts and such like. Most of my clients have now ghosted me, I'm assuming because theyre now using Chat Gpt. Even the job boards have hardly any writing contracts listed. It's very depressing. Luckily I do have a good pension, but still.

I do have one gig writing blogs on stainless steel cookware, so that's nice.

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

I remember back in the aughts, a site I played on was one of those pet sites with cute things to collect and what not. One of the things was artists could make custom content, and if you were not an artist, you could pay someone to do it for you.

And people complained that there were no "free" art for them to have and what not.

It struck me at the time, and mind, I am the biggest penny pincher who ever pinched, that you should not GET free art because that would mean someone- the artist- is not being paid for their labor.

Unless you get it as a present of course.

This AI thing reminds me of that. And all the companies say it is to "improve their services" when how the fuck could ripping off people improve servies

Uncle Betamax's avatar

Oh yeah, the artists (VFX mostly) I know get very pissed off if people ask them for free stuff.

Freebie-hunters don't appreciate the amount of actual work that goes into creating that image or mesh or whatever.

AI is sort-of an automated version of that- it doesn't even ask, just steals images etc and tries to make them different enough to pass muster as new work.

ExecutorElassus's avatar

I once heard bot-driven "art" generators like Stable Diffusion, etc., described as "a way to make art for people who don't like making art."

Also as an inevitable consequence of the content-ification of creative work.

I really hope the various efforts to poison the sources these bots use for their training sets pick up steam.

Uncle Betamax's avatar

"I once heard bot-driven "art" generators like Stable Diffusion, etc., described as "a way to make art for people who don't like making art."

No one is stopping these prompt jockeys from picking up a pencil and learning. They just can't be arsed.

I can't create art, I can barely draw water from the tap, but I've never found myself plotting to trivialize the abilities of those who can.

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

Oh trust me, I GET the free thing XD I love free. VERY MUCH.

But people should not be demanding artists give them stuff for free. That is a bit too much.

SkeptiKC's avatar

This is digital plagiarism.

SkeptiKC's avatar

I have been spending my morning with the disc golf player who is going through some personal trials lately. He found out yesterday that repairing his truck would be several thousands of dollars, and I am practicing my al-anon skill of not immediately jumping in to solve the problem.

On a more positive note, though, I met the disc golf player's 11 year old son who loves me totally and who beat me at Name that AC/DC tune 11-6. However, the child has never seen Maximum Overdrive which has a sound track by AC/DC.

All is quiet on all fronts here, and today I am looking forward to lunch with my cousin today, and this weekend should be a breeze, though too short.

Ugh. This ghastly woman, who mowed down 2 children and only stopped because the crashe detection in her car shut the car down.

---

Rebecca Grossman

should receive consecutive life sentences in the murders of two brothers run down in a Westlake Village crosswalk, because she shows no remorse and refuses to accept responsibility for the crash, prosecutors say.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞

𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Grossman was convicted

in February of two counts of murder, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and one count of hit and run in the 2020 deaths of Mark and Jacob Iskander, ages

11

and 8. Before the crash, she had

drunk at least two margaritas and had Valium in her system as she raced her then-boyfriend, Scott Erickson, through the residential neighborhood, speeding up to 81 mph in a 45-mph zone, according to evidence presented at trial. When she slammed into

the Iskander brothers, who were in a marked crosswalk, the force was equal to her Mercedes SUV being dropped from a 12-story building onto the boys, according to a motion filed by the prosecution seeking the maximum penalty in Grossman’s sentencing.

SkeptiKC's avatar

This is one of those occasions that I find myself almost approving of capitol punishment.

What that bitch has done is unforgiveable.

Uncle Betamax's avatar

There's fucking race tracks for this stupid shit, albeit they probably wont let you drive drunk and partially fucking sedated.

What sentence was handed down from the beak for this?

Rocket Cat's avatar

I have heard this story more times than I should have in AA. Prison cannot rehabilitate them, either. Alcoholism

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

This is more than alcoholism I feel. Lots of drunks in the country, very few of them decide to race their boyfriends and kill children crossing the street.

Even other drunk drivers are not generally having a fun time racing when they kill someone. And they also show remorse.

She did not care or see these children as actual human beings.

Rocket Cat's avatar

Yeah, a sense of entitlement and crap character take years to work on in recovery and maight never go away

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

Actually knew a rich drunk who got his best friend killed (drunk was driving, best friend also drunk and not wearing a seat belt) on the eve of said rich drunk's wedding.

There was not a wedding. He did go to jail, but he sobbed about what he had done before he even got arrested (that is the rich bit- if it were a poor person or person of color, they would have been arrested at the scene).

It is very chilling that she does not care she killed an 11 and an 8 year old. Makes me wonder if killing people was part of the race.

Rocket Cat's avatar

Addicts are hardheaded incorrigibles. I knew one who killed a stranger, vehicular manslaughter…she was just all me me me about it, and we were nearby neighbors and I needed every friend I could get at the time, and have a philosophy about students and sponsees that the learning occurs when the student is ready. Money insulates from consequences, which is why there are so many rotten billionaires

Uncle Betamax's avatar

No, but it CAN stop them murdering more people via negligence and selfishness. Prison is containment as well as rehabilitation.

Rocket Cat's avatar

Oh, I am all for prison, especially for incorrigible and dangerous addicts…locked up is the safest place for them

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

Aww poor little charity giving mother of two just had an oopsie and killed two people while being drunk off her ass and driving

Jen's Taking Greenland's avatar

Edit: Also they need to nail the boyfriend for accessory to manslaughter or assisted or whatevers. Lets get drunk and race our cars in a residential. Was that someone else's kid? OH WELL

Rocket Cat's avatar

I get up in the morning at 5 in the dark like a hardcore Anabaptist with indoor tygers, start my kettle and think about how it’s 11 am in London, everybody has had several teas already and those cakes we like…in the future. Then I think about how it is 8 pm in the future in Oz, and maybe it’s my blonde hair, but I just have to accept this without understanding how instead of rotating the planet in my mind with respect to the sun in illustration like a Jedi. Is mental 3D rotation a skill engineers can learn, or is it a form of intelligence you are either born with or without?

Wayne Allen's avatar

I'm not sure if it's innate or learned, but I did play with Legos and other building toys as a kid. Maybe get yourself one of those fancy Lego sets in the nerdy theme of your choice (Harry Potter, LOTR, Star Wars, etc.)

Rocket Cat's avatar

I can Jedi write, type, and even research, so there’s that.

There are so many incredible stories of D-Day, but one that was important but nerdy and behind-the-scenes was the role of weather forecasts. An overview here.

https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145143/forecasting-d-day

UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

Still true to this day. I used to work with weathermen from the 607th Weather Squadron. They were not to be trifled with. Most of them had graduated from Airborne School and/or Ranger School and SERE school and while it was never said aloud, they were widely believed to operate regularly on the uncool side of the DMZ.

Sadly, the stock isn’t valued like a normal business, because he’s a cult leader and his fanbois have inflated the stock price far beyond GAAP valuation.

If he is quit-fired, and Tesla’s valuation loses the cult bonus, everyone associated with Tesla (by owning the stock) also loses.
