Today's digital magic could make the images a lot clearer if it was in anybody's interest to do so.

Much of the Fleischer Studios work fell into public domain and was neglected for decades. There's just no money in preservative work on them.

One day, in one of the many suburbs where I have lived, some little kids from down the street came by. They were interested in the vegetable garden I was growing in the patch of desert out back. They had never seen such. They wanted to take a look at it and I said, Sure, go look. I came out later, after they had gone home, and found that one of my carrots had been pulled, then carefully re-inserted into its bed. That meant, of course, that it was time for that carrot to come inside with me to the kitchen.

I was actually afraid of this clip cuz Watership down was done in a similar style. My hypothesis is for gen xers of a certain age on either side were deeply traumatized watching this flick. Those that ran and pretended not to be affected came out Fuck Ted Cruz style, the ones that had a kinder empathetic folk who want to help, well it's WHY were so damn cynical. (I mean look at Wonkette's staff/writers/owners)

My watership down hypothesis to explain a bit of gen x and our generational peculiarity & cynicism. Again, methinks it may be one of the many reasons wonkette is like it is (for the better side) the worse side is fuck ted cruz.

It may have something to do with the frame rate - lots of slightly jerky motions. A smooth motion requires lots of frames.

My understanding of what is a Mary Sue differs from how it is used in the article. The term came out of early Star Trek fandom, which, then, was mostly about writing fan fiction, which was largely written by women (some of whom went on to professional careers). Any trope in the genre was to introduce a new character into the established cast, a girl cadet who would in the course of the story would correct Spock's math, make out with Kirk and single-handedly save the Enterprise. Yes, it was very much wish-fulfillment but because it was much female based wish fulfillment it was appropriate to call the trope "Mary Sue." It wasn't intended to insult women, women writers or women character but merely to acknowledge that there was this trope. Action-hero characters, whether male or female, are expected to special, superior, infinitely capable. The Indian woman discussed in the article is the action-hero character in the move. She is not a Mary Sue. She is supposed to be superior. That she has to fight to prove her superior status is, sad;y, typical for female lead characters. And her rejection by male viewers is another example of the misogynistic bias against woman.

Here again is your reminder of the four most important words you need to say if you ever find yourself “in the box”:

I want a lawyer.

It is your right to have a lawyer present during questioning. Exercise it. The job of the police is to work you until they get a confession. If they’re interrogating you, it’s because they already think you’re guilty and they just need you to say it. You need someone in the room whose job is to protect your rights.

Women are disposable to republican men. Well, most women. Maybe not their own daughters. Although with the rise of White Christian Nationalism in the party, even daughters may not be safe.

The woman imprisoned for 43 years…..just appalling.

Hopefully her attorney will be able to litigate against the state and win an award large enough so that she doesn’t have to work - adapting to the world after 43 years in prison will be horrifyingly difficult.

And this is why qualified immunity needs to end. The prosecutor who railroaded her and the cop who committed the murder need to be charged, even if they’re barely compos mentos in nursing homes, and if convicted, spend the rest of their days imprisoned.

Expand full comment
Wookiee Monster's avatar

The woman was mentally ill and heavily medicated at the time she was interrogated. The fact that any statements she made were considered admissible was a travesty. Throw the complete lack of any corroborating evidence linking her to the crime and it’s one of the most egregious cases I’ve seen in years. The DA should be prosecuted for misconduct. So should the judge who allowed this farce.

Agree entirely. As I said, 'repeal qualified immunity' - if DAs and prosecutors are liable for bad prosecutions and such liability has teeth, I suspect there will be a lot fewer bad prosecutions.

This is good, but there should be official recognizance that his actions caused a woman to lose most of her life in the prison system.

If anyone in his family is getting his pension benefits, I'd work to discontinue them entirely, and suggest a clawback of any benefits his family received.

Until we start making it painful to behave unlawfully, cops and their families have zero incentive to behave better.

Bingo.

Plato realized this was the case several thousand years ago; his question "but who will watch the watchers?" echoes unheard today.

Abuse of power needs to be severely punished. Unfortunately, those in power don't care for this idea so it is seldom enacted into statute.

I really liked Prey and I hope Naru will get another outing. Movies with strong women who take no shit and come out on top despite the odds, while generally fantasies, are emotionally rewarding because they refute the old tired patriarchal "now don't you fret none, little lady" trope, stand it on its pointy little head. I will watch just about anything that Michelle Yeoh has a part in, or Ming-Na Wen. or Jessica Henwick or Sigourney Weaver.

I've commented before, the Predator franchise always did a better job with female characters than it received credit for. In the very first film, the woman is actually the only one who already knows something about the Predator. Which you can say is feeding into the noble savage/ magic Negro tropes, but that's how you get nuance out of cliches.

AVP was always in a separate continuity. It specifically took the liberty of assuming the Alien was known pre Nostromo, though Prometheus strained things even more.
