Also, too, Blues Brothers wouldn't have been nearly as good without her sassyness re: four fried chickens and a coke.

One story, more about me, really, but it involves Respect. Years (and a couple of jobs) ago, I was at a work function, a mixer that involved karaoke. My boss was there as part of it, so I decided a rendition of the song might send him a message. Naturally, it flew right past him, but I did get props from one our clients for the effort. That may be the only time I've attempted one of her songs on a stage in front of others.

Not that Aretha needs any excuses for that magnificent performance of Nessun Dorma, but it was too late for the orchestra to change the key for her. So, she sang in the key the orchestra had rehearsed and she nailed it.

Brilliant tribute by Robyn. I especially liked the variety of videos which showed Aretha's amazing versatility. I'm an oldz, and like anyone my age, Aretha was a major part of the soundtrack of our lives.

I saw an interview last night with Carole King. And even though Carole had a big hit with "Natural Woman", she said that she and Gerry Coffin actually wrote that song specifically for Aretha. And Carole said that when she and Gerry were writing that song, they were worried they wouldn't come up with something worthy of Aretha. I imagine that Aretha, despite the final product, would have MADE it worthy and then given all the R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the writers.

She stepped in for Pavarotti at the last minute because he fell ill. She was only given 20 minutes notice.

All of the music everyone has provided sounds astounding. I was gobsmacked by her voice.coming through the dusty speaker of the radio on top of the refrigerator back when. I enjoy finding out about your individual favorites, and that you like her even though she didn’t work for you.

I love that song. I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me). So sad to think they're both gone now.
