This seems like a useful way to create jobs and keep people safe from crime: the Arizona Legislature included almost $1 million extra in the budget for a for-profit prison company, GEO Group, because lobbyists for the company asked real nicely for it. The Arizona Department of Corrections says the money isn't necessary, but lobbyists convinced House Appropriations Chairman John Kavanagh that GEO Group totally needed the money because it wasn't making enough profits from providing temporary emergency beds for Arizona prisons. How can you call yourself a for-profit company if your government contract doesn't guarantee you a profit, for heaven's sake? Might as well just have socialism if you oppose letting honest corporations make money, after all.
Fuck Kavanagh, he's a first class douche nozzle. But the whole for-profit prison grift starts at the top- see Jan Brewer. The whole thing is a bad joke and the idiotic retirees who keep voting these assholes into power based upon ginned up fear are the punchline
“[t]he company’s lobbyists apparently felt comfortable approaching Rep. Kavanagh with their request for more money, perhaps because he had received at least six campaign contributions from GEO executives and officials during the last legislative election cycle.”
the obvious solution here is that social welfare groups just need to learn how to do a better job of buying politicians...
Doesn't Sheriff Joe house them in war-surplus tents and feed them hobo beans?

Just giving money to private prisons? What could go wrong?
