Good news everyone! No one is finally going to jail for ruining the entire economy, and many of your lives, and the lives of your children. But! Someone or someone might have to pay a fine as punishment, so at least that's something, right? The Obama administration collected some crowd-pleasing headlines with its announcement that the Justice Department is suing Standard & Poor’s, the rating agency that notoriously fueled the financial crisis and crash by duping investors into buying billions in rotten securities. The government is said to be seeking a cash penalty of more than $1 billion.
Remember when they asked disgraced S&L potentate Charles Keating if he thought his campaign contributions would influence the votes of the recipients? "You better fucking believe I did," he said, more or less.
so- be party to stealing trillions from the US taxpayers, make hundreds of billions yourself for your efforts and your punishment is a slap on the wrist 1 billion dollar fine and no jail time for anyone? What a deal, pay pennies on the dollar for the money you stole (using that stolen money to pay the fine- apparently asset forfeiture only applies to pot dealers) and walk away untouched otherwise. Better yet, write off that 1 billion as a loss on next year's taxes and get a tax refund from Uncle Sam. What a scam, I'm definitely in the wrong line of work...
Blow up the economy and screw over millions of people while making truck loads of money for yourself. Buy up their assets at fire sale prices when they go under, using the money they were forced to give you as a taxpayer bailout, rent them back their own house now that they're too poor to own it- all at a tidy profit. Rinse, repeat every few years...
