OK so I’ve heard this number, and never seen a source for it. So I dID My owN rESearCH and found this from the Congressional Research Service:

2 U.S.C. §192 (2012). As a result of congressional classification of offenses, the penalty for contempt of Congress is a Class A misdemeanor; thus, the $1,000 maximum fine under §192 has been increased to $100,000. See 18 U.S.C. §§3559, 3571 (2012)

So it seems the original statute maxes the penalty at $1000, but later statutes classified the offense in such a way that the fine became up to $100,000. And now I know!

But it doesn’t actually change the fact that a $100,000 fine is only somewhat more consequential than a $1000 fine, when you’ve got the entire wingnuttosphere behind you.

And, as someone smarter than me has pointed out, a year in prison is still a year in prison. Calling it “Club Fed” doesn’t change that.
