Don’t know who her loan service is, but many won’t tell graduates that they can request hardship deferments if they’re seeking employment, and can request income-based payments if they’re working. You probably knew that, but just in case.

One important factor, state and federal governments have been cutting support for higher education for years. So colleges and universities increase tuition every time that happens.

Up Here it's all done through the banks. They're quite forthcoming if you ask the right questions.

If only men and women of this one's means paid their fair share of taxes, this country could pay for a secondary or trades education for everyone who wants one.

One of the major costs of healthcare is salaries, which have to be high since medical professionals have so much student debt. Forgive that debt and medical costs can come down for everyone. Write it off at source before interest and charges get applied.

Hell to the yeah! My parents paid for my college and med school from the college savings account they set up when I was born. And it was INCREDIBLY generous of them!! But it also didn't run anywhere NEAR the amounts that it would cost today! My kids both have 529s, but how many children in this country are born into families that are surviving paycheck to paycheck?? Very few American families can afford to put money away like that - it's needed NOW for rent, food, medical care, etc. I was born into privilege, and my kids were born into privilege, and I HATE seeing just how lopsided that is becoming. I perfectly understand that no one should expect equality of OUTCOME, but I damn sure believe we should strive for equality of OPPORTUNITY.

Look, if bosses can't abuse new graduates cause they're not terrified of debt if they lose their jobs, then Republicans are OUT!!

Engineers tend to be good at engineering. That's it. We tend to SUCK at historical analysis and/or anything to do with something not black/white like the correct math answer.

We don't really DO nuance. Any engineer that says otherwise is a narcissist that thinks because he can do differential equations that he qualifies for every other job. Ignore the poor deluded lambs if you can; shout them down if you can't, and always always always destroy them with votes.

Robert F. Smith, you are an amazing and remarkable man! Thank you immensely for all the help you've given to these college graduates! I managed to get through undergraduate, graduate, and law school without a ton of student loans, because I was fortunate enough to earn scholarships, fellowships, and assistant instructorships, and, let's face it, because college and graduate schools and law school did not cost the exorbitant amount of money that they do now. Yes, I still had to take out and repay student loans of $240 per month, and that was an enormous bite out of my salary every month back then. I cannot imagine how students can ever pay off the astonishing cost of student loans nowadays, when education costs more than I could ever have imagined. Thank you again, sir, for freeing students of crippling student loan debt. You are one of a kind.

How long has "sunflower butter" been a thing? Because the first time I ever heard of it was within the last few weeks, when some school was poor-shaming kids with PB&J SB&J sandwiches.

"Parents and students wept -- delighted that they wouldn't have to keep living together." SER, you make me laugh. Thank you.

Yeah, squeeze it from the cops, too. They had no business cuffing the kid and the only way they'll suffer any consequences is if they have to pay through suit. Although... the article does state that then after cuffing him they investigated. I guess it is easier to sue the stray cop than the local ferals.

To this point, we still have a great higher education system and at least 1/3 of the population goes to college.
