I tell my students, especially ones that are less keen on education, that there are two types of authority: official and actual. As a teacher, I have official authority based on. the state having placed me in the classroom with certain responsibilities. The actual is that I am educated, and know some things that those students need to know to pass high school (short-term) and in life (long-term). They can quibble all they want about the former, and I do not care about it that much, but if they want an education they should at least respect and engage with the latter.
I keep saying that any writings that encourage citizens to disobey authority are downright Unamerican, but they still won't ban that foul Declaration against the authority of King George.
No matter how rotten authoritarian, bigoted, white "Christian" nationalist/supremacist fascists become, every day they give us even MORE reasons to hate them.
Apparently my Roman Catholic, Republican, Conservative parents were radicals and I never knew because they let me read "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler". Actually they let me read whatever I wanted so definitely radicals. By the way you know who else banned books and didn't like it when their authority was disrespected? The Nazis. Yeah, I went there. If it fits, it fits.
“It doesn’t teach kids to respect authoriteh, and that causes unrest …” Can’t have that. They might grow up and storm the seat of government … Oh, wait … 🤔
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
Every fucking book in America that discusses the refusal of British Americans to accept the authority of George III and to come out in open rebellion against him and his agents MUST BE BANNED NOW!!! What example does it show the children of today? That disobedience and concerted disrespect for authority is acceptable? Remove them all now!
I seem to recall Trump defending a lot of MAGA cultists against illegal actions they commit simply because they disagree with what Congress is getting ready to do on 1/6. In fact he calls them hostages and heroes. I bet Trump would call Amy Anne a hero and the book a hostage. Don't you? If Trump is anything he's fair and honest, right?
Pippin supposedly has two teenagers, but there's no indication that they attend schools in the Indian River County school district - and if they're teenagers, then Pippin has no reason to ban the book for pre-teens. As it is, she's come out against the coming change in Florida state law ( which DeSantis endorsed, because too many assholes like Pippin were abusing the previous law that allowed anyone to protest books in school libraries ), and has urged book banners to swamp school boards with objections to books until the new law ( which restricts people without children attending schools in the district to a single protest against a single book per month ) goes into effect July 1st.
All I can say is that those Indian River County school board members that upheld this ban request have no business being in any position of authority, since they seem so over-protective of their authority. If you have to inveigh against people challenging that authority, then you do not deserve to have any.
Pippin's kids do not attend public schools in Indian River County. Anyway, it would have nothing at all to do with what Jen lets her kids read or don't read - and everything to do with what Jen demands *your* kids not be able to read. Who's surprised?
"teaching rebellion of school board authority"

Did they also ban "Fahrenheit 451" or "1984" both very subversive books about authoritarianism.
Whether they did or not, both are often banned.

Didn't they try it in 1861?
"the first step toward majoring in English Literature, Women’s Studies, or Anarchist Bombmaking."
Doktor Zoom is reading my notes for my substack. : )
Ta, Dok. Way too many firemen of the Fahrenheit 451 variety.

Hey, where's you make a one time donation link? Lots of us would make a donation who can't do all the upgrade to paid option.

'Come back to see me when you're a 10 honey'
I read that as “come see me when you’re 10” and didn’t think it was an entirely unfair character aspersion.

Well, if that's the case. maybe we'll hear a lot less of Pippin, when she's limited to one objection a month
Don't bet on it. Much like a Waffle House, her mouth never closes.
