'Oriental' derives from Latin 'oriens', which means 'rising' as in 'rising sun'. (And one Asian culture seems not to be upset to be associated with the rising sun.) The word is pan-european, and has not invaded Asian languages-- not to my knowledge. I fail to see the point of your 'gaijin' what-if. Is 'eastern' proscribed because it is too broad a descriptor? Or for that matter, 'western'-- should it only apply to cowboy movies? I have it on good authority that Asian tourists come to LA hoping to take pics of cowboys, and find them--$10 a snap-- on Hollywood Boulevard.
