Little India on Fraser street had, for years, the ability to drop in and grab vegan samosas literally by the dozen with no notice and for 50 cents each. By the time I moved out of Vancouver proper, that was no longer true -- you had to pay 75 cents each unless you made a large advance order, which allowed you to grab them for 60.

There were lots of places to get samosas, of course, but outside of the Fraser St. concentration of small, immigrant-run restaurants with Indian soap operas on the TV 24 hours a day, the samosas were less tasty and at least twice the price.

No immigrants, no kebabs might indeed seem a silly -- or at least whimsical -- sign, but over and over and over, the best money I've ever spent on restaurant food, for the combination of flavour and value, has consistently been in immigrant run spaces.

I'll take immigrants over theocrats any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

When I lived in San Jose, my buddy and I were at a strip mall and he pointed out to me a place with signs in Chinese, Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese, and in English just "NOODLES": he told me this is where actual Asians went and if I wanted actual Asian food that is where I should go.

There's nothing silly about kebab. The racists will have to pry the kebab out of my cold dead hands before I let them harm my many favourite kebab shops. Yes, even the one where the kebab is good but the staff are assholes.

WHAAAT? Cops arresting fascists? Will wonders never cease? Here in PDX they trade white power handsigns and the cops act as the fash's personal security detail!

The 2011 riots Starmer prosecuted weren't racist or anti-immigrant: they started over the police shooting of a Black man, then turned into just a raw expression of desperate anger in the middle of austerity. Lots of looting, no racism.

Folk band Stick in the Wheel did a great song about it (and the life-changing, family-destroying, prison sentences Starmer was handing out to, basically, stupid boisterous poor kids), called "Me 'n Becky".

Could you link some articles regarding these protests and the sentencing afterwards? I haven't heard anything about them and would like to find out more.

Thanks! I wasn't sure which search terms would produce the best results.

Np, sorry for the snark. If you want another Google, try "Mark Duggan killing". He might or might not have been a gangster. But according to the cops he was also a David Copperfield level illusionist, able to throw a gun from beneath his taxi seat, out of the window, and over a high fence, without any of the dozens of cops training their guns on him seeing.

A week to get the first rioters jail time there, versus two years to even get started here? Toughen it up, America, your next insurrection is less than three months away!

Say this for the police state UK, they're an effective police state that doesn't allow riots from anyone, not even from those who think they should be an even worse police state.

We need to do more of this. Every time the fascists and MAGAts try to hold *anything*, come out in force and en masse and just get in their way.

It says a lot that my first reaction to this was "wait, the cops DIDN'T overtly side with the fash? The legal system DIDN'T bend over backwards for the nazis?"

Expand full comment

Of course not, the UK government doesn't tolerate competition. A police state cannot tolerate someone else using violence for political means.

Its Britain, where there might be issues of institutional racism in the police and all that. But the general population is totally ok with making it illegal to be a member of far right organizations that promote violence.

There are memorials in literally every single village to people who died fighting Nazi's.

I understand the whole 'freedom of association' thing, but making it illegal to be a member of the KKK would be a healthy thing.

Ahead of the upcoming academic year, the school’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) released its “points of unity” to rally supporters “against Zionism and against U.S. imperialism.”

“It is violently oppressive to passively observe violence, whether in Palestine, here, or anywhere in the world,” an Instagram post by the group reads. “We condone all forms of principled action, including armed rebellion, necessary to stop Israel’s genocide and apartheid and to dismantle imperialism and capitalism more broadly.”

In your experience, are 18-22 year-olds known for tempered speech and sound judgement?

They're perfectly able to come up with extreme takes all by themselves. Or do you suppose it's Russians? Could be Iranians, Chinese, or maybe Methodists too.

Or maybe it's just college kids being what they've been since the days of Aristotle.

It's being reported Russia is behind this with possible help from Iran and China.

I was just thinking about these assholes. The UK riots were the only thing going for right right now. With PAB decompensating, the Harris/Walz ticket taking off like a rocket, LePen beaten, the Tories beaten, and Ukraine wandering into Russia to collect Putin’s troops and tanks, they had nothing going for them, except for Nazis mobbing mosques and whatnot. Now that’s gone away, so sad.

And NO IMMIGRANTS, NO TACOS!
